Theresa May has said Donald Trump's criticism of Sadiq Khan in the wake of the London Bridge terror attack was "wrong".
But the PM said the US president's state visit would still go ahead.
Mr Khan, the mayor of London, has called for it to be cancelled - as has Lib Dem leader Tim Farron.
Mr Trump attacked Mr Khan on Twitter after the mayor told Londoners not to be alarmed about an increased police presence following Saturday's attack.
The London mayor said Mr Trump was wrong about "many things" and that his state visit, expected to take place later this year, should not go ahead.

That’s from an event in March. It was a counter-protest by a group called Britain First when London held a ‘March against Racism’ rally.
Hey, Theresa, go put on a burqua. It will make you more attractive. But the static coming out of your mouth every time you try to say something intelligent will give you away.
No reason to be alarmed

Trump let the raghead scum off easy. A bitch-slap with a slab of bacon was more appropriate.
So, so close. Here's the deal: elites control over 90% of global wealth. In the UK, the aristocracy has owned practically the entire island since 1066. In this context, they manage the country in the same manner as a farmer manages his herd ie the more head of cattle under management, the richer the farmer.
The British upper class who own all the property could hardly give a sh!t who the actual tenants are, as long as rental rates continue to increase. That's why massive immigration from the former colonies is so widely supported: the upper classes control media, finance & government, so what's good for them - via increased pressure on real estate prices - is instituted as policy.
I'm sure they more than fully recognize what they've done and who they've imported. To them, lower & middle class English culture is low-brow, so yeah, all cultures are equal in that sense.
It's the same thing with illegal immigration in the US. Which area of the US has not experienced real estate appreciation? Which areas where people who have enjoyed large equity gains not also enjoy hiring cheap, acquiescent nannies, gardeners and construction laborers?
This is the globalist, leftist sales pitch. Enjoy life now, since you won't be around to reap the bitter grapes in another generation or two.
I wonder what Churchill would have said.
I use a chromebook with Chrome and often I can’t capture something that other systems can,
Then, like this one I can.
As my wife, say when stuff like that happens, the reason is simple, “It’s electronic!”
Show me the quote, not what “somebody said she said”.
Mrs May said: “I think Donald Trump was wrong in the things he has said about Sadiq Khan”
Theresa May: she’s no Margaret Thatcher
It’s OK for everyone and their brother to criticize Trump, but he cannot criticize anyone at all? How does that make any sense, she’s a kook.
Who was this "Perfect" evil, sadistic demon on earth?????
may is no Winston Churchhill or Maggie Thatcher. What a loser.
Khan’s a muslim who doesn’t like moderate muslims.
I get the impression that Mrs. May is playing the same game politically for the election that the Chicago White Sox played for the 1919 World Series.
If the Tories lose a majority in the House of Commons, they can deflect responsibility for Brexit and it could slow it down.
Deliberately throwing the election with foolish responses to terrorism.
Troops out on the streets, troops off the street in time for the next attack, blaming “extremism” and the social networks of the Internet.
What we see is the conquering of a western democracy from within and at thier own hands no less
