It's worth noting that one of the "lessons learned" from the landing at Gallipoli during World War I was that it's impossible to force a landing on a defended beach. Good thing we ignored that lesson.

I read a lot about the disaster at Dieppe, reading afterward that "we learned a lot about invading a fortified area" and wondering if that was just a sop to ease the pain of the casualties suffered.
