Many cats will gently nip you to let you know that (1) they want to be petted, (2) they’ve had enough petting, (3) they want some attention. My Maine Coon does it. My little rescue kitty does it. It’s a form of communication. It sounds like Mr. Biggles just doesn’t realize how hard he is nipping. He needs some gentle behavioral shading. I’ve had to do that with formerly ferals I’ve adopted over the years and they were the best cats ever.

How do you get a cat to stop nipping hard?

I know someone who just got a rescue cat and the cat nips hard enough to hurt but no broken skin, yet.

One of my cats, Cookie, will nip at the back of one’s leg if they raise their voice to spouse (or anybody else). Unfortunately, our cats now have to live in a kitty compound in the back yard that keeps them safe from the urban coyotes that prowl the neighborhood, can’t have them in the house now for medical reasons. So I don’t get nipped anymore when I’m out there feeding or petting them. But she will not tolerate any temper expressed by anyone without circling behind for a nip or two on the calf.
