Nah, I totally support the coal miners. The reference was to that old saying "a canary in the coal mines", meaning to sacrifice an "unimportant" person or their reputation by sending them into a controversial situation before allowing the "important" people to comment or act on it.

It references the technique coal miners used in the days before high tech to see if a mine was safe for them to work in. They would toss a small bird down as far as they could. If it didn't fly back out, they knew the bird had been asphixiated by noxious fumes underground.
