My theory is if the Confederate Army could have held off the Union at Atlanta and stopped them there then McClellan would have won the 1864 election.

I'm inclined to agree. I also believe most soldiers on both sides joined for adventure more than anything else, certainly not to be shredded by a miniball and George McClellan ran a great Boy Scout Jamboree.
