SOUTH ORANGE, New Jersey (WABC) -- A group of middle school students from New Jersey caused quite a flap, after half of them refused to take a picture with Republican House Speaker Paul Ryan.
It happened Thursday during a field trip to Washington.
Reaction from the students' parents are as politically divided as the country.
"It's not just a picture," said Matthew Malespina, a student.
Matthew says he couldn't go through with it.
It didn't matter that Paul Ryan is the Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, or that he is third in-line to the presidency.
When he and his classmates from South Orange Middle School had the chance to take a picture with the speaker. Matthew watched from the parking lot with 100 of his fellow students.

Another reason to homeschool. I would not want my child in a class or a picture (etc) with children whose parents (who may or may not be here legally) hate the Founding principles of America. If they hate traditional values, limited government - not that the Speaker even remotely represents these things - then why not find a country which better matches their values?
Heck, even if Obama visited the school, I wouldn’t have had my kid boycott. You still have to respect the Office, if not the person in it.
Disrepectful, regardless of who the Speaker is.
Good move. I would not. Ryan is an ignorant RINO.
Now do you sycophants understand that it is not just Trump the liberals hate?
If Kasich (or take your pick of ABTs) had won the Presidency he would be reviled the same way Trump is.
I wouldn’t read too much into this there are too many reasons not to be photographed with Paul Ryan.
I would not allow him to mime popularity with the American people using my image. He is a lazy, venial, whiner who has worked against American interests and has not supported the Commander-In-Chief. Why would he deserve my respect?
Its unfortunate that this position might put me in agreement with liberals despising him for their own loony reasons but I have broad shoulders.
Matthew’s mother is ELISSA Malespinna, a educator on her bio. she is crowing on twitter but not mentioning she told her son what to say.
She is a educator of hate and teaching her son to disrespect people he has never met based on his mother’s progressive communist agenda.
ISIS also teaches hate to their young.
“It is as though respect for authority is much less important than civil disobedience to future low information voters.”
In no way is this a case of civil disobedience.
Exactly. And they still think of W as Hitler, even though he's about as liberal as it gets.
I agree with you in concept. My issue is with socialist government schooling and its primary product: the Bernie voter
Were they conservative kids? If so, I kind of get it. But I bet they weren’t. Just uninformed libs thinking he is their enemy. He should be lifted on their shoulders as a hero in the pic.
I place the blame more on the parents.
Trickle down college radicalism. It always starts higher up and the younger ones follow suit. Adults should have set them straight.
Conservatives don’t act that childish, even those with whom they may disagree.
It’s their loss
How many kids get to take a picture with the Speaker of the House?
Something they could have kept forever and passed down
Regardless of his party affiliation
It’s about the office
I understand why no democrats would pose with him....and I understand why no republicans would pose with him....so who did pose with him?
Its sad that their minds have been poisoned like this.
To be honest, I don’t think my son (who is in 9th grade) would want to be in the pic with Ryan either. He has very low tolerance for hypocricy. He also hates RINO’s. I don’t think I would try to force him into that picture ... he is very stubborn and that is a battle I would likely lose.
Nancy?
