My recommendation is to go buy a gun (or many guns) and be prepared to defend yourself. I find it unfortunate one has to get a ‘permit’ for a Constitutionally guaranteed right but so-be-it. At least most states are going that direction.

In short, a right not exercised is a right lost.

Permits, particularly the Enhanced CCW that Idaho has offer additional advantages, in that you may access places a standard permit doesn’t allow. If you have an encounter with law enforcement, they will know in short order that you have a permit and that you have been vetted by the NCIS system. It basically identifies you as one of the “good guys”. No guarantees of course, but every little bit helps.

My one and only late night traffic stop in the last 15 years went very smoothly. Cordial and polite all the way around, and no ticket was issued.
