It took school and police officials just a few minutes to extinguish 16-year-old Corey Walgren's promising future. All they did was utter two words: child pornography.
Corey, a junior at Naperville North High School in Naperville, Illinois, was a perfectly normal, social, good-looking 16-year-old. He was an honor roll student with dreams of attending a Big Ten college. He had typical interests for a teenager boy: hockey, fishing, and, yes, girls.
Corey committed suicide in January, just hours after a school resource officer confronted him about an alleged illegal item on his cell phonea recording of Corey having sex with a female classmate. The girl had informed a dean at the school that she believed Corey had played the recording for his friends (it's not clear whether he did), which prompted the authorities to summon Corey to the principal's office. They called his mother and told both of them that Corey was being investigated for possession of child pornography.
Corey left the meeting, headed to a nearby parking garage, and jumped.
That's all according to a heartbreaking story in The Chicago Tribune, which obtained police records of the case and spoke with Corey's parents about his death.
"I think they wanted to scare him straight," Corey's mother, Maureen Walgren, told the Tribune. "Instead, they scared him to death."

I agree completely with your post. This is a sad tragedy.
Except for showing the video to others, this was not a situation for the school to deal with.
For sharing the video, he should have been expelled.
For having the video on his phone, he should have been prosecuted.
I did not say it was legal.
Then we have to consider, too, things like that teens have so many more truly bad influences on them today. The entertainment industry churns out destructive ideas and images, sowing moral confusion. And whereas children in other eras got steady guidance from spending much if not most of their time with people older than them, today teens look to other teens (as well as entertainers and teachers) for much of their guidance. Those things cant really help the development of their brains.
Great post. And beaversmom, your #27 as well.
"Teens" today have the bodies of adults and the responsibilities and accountability of children. This is an extremely dangerous combination.
Today we have a children's clothing store called "Gap Kids." When I was a child, our local clothing store was "Little Miss and Mister Shop." Children were told to aspire to adult ideals.
Right.
He never told her he taped it.Sharing the video is where both the charges are.He lied to her and then betrayed her.
You’re quite a master at straining gnats. You were strongly intimating it.
“He never told her he taped it.Sharing the video is where both the charges are.He lied to her and then betrayed her.”
We don’t charge 16 year old boys that lie to girls.
In any case, it’s a shame he killled himself.
It would have been preferable for him to be prosecuted and for the girl’s big brother to kick his ass.
You need to read the article. The girl only said she "believed Corey had played the recording for 'his friends' (it's not clear whether he did)." He was not ever accused of sending it to anyone.
The video recording was apparently of such poor quality that it was impossible to make out any of its images. But under Illinois's age of consent laws, one person under the age of 17 can be charged with sexual abuse if he had sexual contact with another person under the age of 17, even if they're both the same age. Two 16-year-olds in a fully consensual relationship could be charged with abusing each other.
Who is we.The guy lied to a girl and taped sex with her. Then he according to the girl sent this secret tape out.All against the law. This has nothing to do with what he did to himself.
So now it will become illegal for police to mention the crime they are investigating?
Come on,name me one person who would go to the Dean of Students and say I had sex that was recorded. We are talking High school. Her parents told her to report him because she found out he was sending the video out to friends.Did she ask him to record it-no.If the video was so bad why did people who care about her alert her.Because he named her.I read the article.
Now that's silly Bishop. You know the answer to that strained question. And he would no doubt be tried and convicted as an adult. What was even the point of that question?
He can lie to the girl.
The other stuff is against the law.
He never told her he taped it.Sharing the video is where both the charges are.He lied to her and then betrayed her.
We dont charge 16 year old boys that lie to girls.
Your not making any sense.
What crime did he commit by lying to the girl?
I am sure I would not make it through the teen years now. When I grew up adults knew teens did not always make good choices and raised us to have morals, and rules to fall back on. On top of that my mother made a great effort to limit temptations, reinforce morals, ETC. constantly and consistently as did all the mother’s I knew.
There was teen sex then for sure but normally when it did happen it was far different than what I hear about now. I knew only committed couples that were at least convinced they were truly in love that went that far. Even then it was all kept so private others were not usually aware unless the girl became pregnant, and if that happened marriage was expected. Exceptions to that were rare and usually considered the result of “bad raising” on the part of parents.
Now parents of many teens seem to think teen sex is normal, expected, has no meaning and even put young teen girls on birth control before the teen may even be considering sex as a matter of course. I think this reinforces to teens that sex is not part of love and is indeed a casual thing. Wrong for so many reasons- starting with the mental and emotional well being of the teens involved.
I am convinced that God put it in our brain that sex is important, special, and something should be dealt with very seriously. I am convinced God intended us to mate for life in order to raise children together as a couple. As we can see that does not happen when people are casual about sex. People I have known during my life that do not respect that seem to be pretty messed up people. Adults can’t manage to deal with casual sex very well and teens are really not developed enough to even be trying to process that.
Many people now think it is just animal instinct and natural. I might believe that too except for the fact that our brains process it far more than animal brains do, it has more meaning to us whether we choose to believe that or not.
Taping her and sending out the tape.
“I just dont understand how young men and women can have relationships in this weird environment, it seems too...complex. I guess.”
This is not a crazy or unreasonable thought. At least in my opinion, it is real real wacky out there now. This social media stuff changes the way people think. The human condition and society did not originally develop with these capabilities. I would be surprised if it turns out well.

Right. Kids should not have to worry so much about the interference of the government.
