Why is it always the average schmucks who attend these events that they target. Never those who are the drawing card and making all the dough. Maybe then the security would be tighter.

Because causing fear in the average person is precisely the intent of terrorism. It's too easy to rationalize away an attack on a celebrity. But like the recent vehicle attacks, or the bus and cafe attacks in Israel, this one struck everyday folks going about their mundane daily affairs. It's much more psychologically effective than whacking some highly visible but detached from day to day reality target. Say somebody kills...Lady Gaga. Probably not many people are going to think "oh no, that could have been me," but this attack is the kind of thing that can make you wonder about every mailbox or trash can (or similar) you walk by.
