Supporters of making California an independent nation are beginning their second longshot attempt to recruit voters by submitting a new proposed ballot measure.
The measure being submitted to state officials Friday by the separatist California Freedom Coalition takes a more gradual approach than one withdrawn by an earlier group last month.
It would have the governor negotiate with the federal government to give California more autonomy as what supporters call a "nation within a nation." Or the talks could eventually lead to full independence.

The 9th biggest economy in the world and the largest agricultural region in North America is not going to starve.

How many businesses would remain in California after the split? Many would leave and their economy would suffer accordingly.
If California were to become an independent nation the US would give them billions on aid every year. Including free gasoline since there’s not a refinery in the state.
I thought she already was....8^)
it is also ate up with socialists
I don't have a problem per say with what you are saying. The order is important. CA leaves first, the whole thing. Then CA counties can form a political union and petition both Sacramento for independence and DC for admission into the Union. The order of how this would plays out matters.
First, break the state into to parts, or arrange a realignment of borders with Nevada - give California Las Vegas, and take most of the northern portion to Nevada, with its access to the sea, or make California at least two separate states, one inland, the remainder the coastal counties (but what about San Diego?).
The coastal county strip could then secede from the remainder of the US, the inland state could continue to be the breadbasket for the rest of America, and the famed “bullet train to nowhere” could be used for a widening of I-5 up through the San Joaquin valley.
All good questions.
I suggest that those who want to remain, take up arms. I suspect that a majority of the people who support session are liberals who hate the military and the reverse is true for those who want to remain in the US.
Liberals by nature are ingrates and don’t realize that a balance is necessary for survival — you need the military for defense, you need a vibrant low tax economy to pay for the entitlements. Hating the military and big business is stupid.
I suggest that we fight for Vegas. That is where the Hover Dam is located and it powers all of southern CA.
Or at least, use it as a bargaining chip. A BIG bargaining chip.
I am constantly amazed by then number of posters who enthusiastically support dismembering our nation. California, for all its current flaws, is an intregral part of our nation. Great nations do not prosper by shedding territory.
Ironically, they are doing this on a site hosted in Fresno, California.
Instead of surrendering and retreating, conservatives should redouble their efforts and work person by person to challenge the California elites on their home turf. Expose each failure of the Democrat party and like water on stone, erode their hold on the state. It is a project of decades, but we can reclaim California.
Ya. But CA, as a new nation, will have to pay for it because it originates in the central States.
All part of the negotiations.
Also, what happens if the US decides to not honor the “water usage agreement?”
It is all part of a bargaining chip to be played and if the remaining 49 states are smart, they will get the most out of it.
Easy. SS is now pay-as-you-go. CA would create its own SSA and Californians would send in their 7.5% to them instead of the DC version.
>>> What about Californias share of the $20 trillion national debt? Does California have to absorb that and pay it off?? Or can they just walk away from it?
Proportional taxation says they would pay 1/10 of that debt. $2 Trillion. That debt would be negotiated and could be paid off with CA bonds. They would assume their own part of the debt.
>>> What about all the military bases in California? They are American bases; will California have its own army and navy?
CA would become part of NATO. We could negotiate using the the bases in CA. Just like in the other NATO countries.
Maybe it is best to move this site to Texas?
Not naturally. But the largest water canal flows from the Colorado in AZ to the LA area.
They split and that agreement no longer is in effect and THEY GD KNOW IT.
It would result in a shooting war over that water.
The political upside is so huge Americans would be fools to fight idea this at all. Doing everything possible to make this happen is the smart play. The MBA's that infest Free Republic look at everything as a business transaction, they are stupid and ignore politics when it is convenient.
So the US military and its assets would transition to CA? How would that work?
The state has a national guard but is under funded and the equipment is not as good as the Feds.
I’m not sure every state would do that. I could see it splitting along ideological lines, more into regions, like Pacific states, New England, the South, the Midwest and perhaps the rockies.
Given the ideological chasm that exists today we may have reached a point where a split up is probably a good thing.
“I don’t have a problem per say with what you are saying. The order is important. CA leaves first, the whole thing. Then CA counties can form a political union and petition both Sacramento for independence and DC for admission into the Union. The order of how this would plays out matters.”
On this fact there can be no dispute.
Besides, it is mostly like a bluff intended to scare the rest of the country into submission.
No LOL. We have agreements in many countries and bases all over the world. CA would be just another host country for our military. Man, this is not that hard.
California would have their own military just like other NATO countries have now.
They should be either in or out. No home rule.
Forty-Five percent of California is federal land. This land us your land. This land is my land.
The Calexit vote should be by county, so if conservative, pro-Union, non-sessech, Californians want to stay, they can.
Move the Nixons and the Reagans to a non-seccesh area of their families’ choosing.
The Calexiters get what is left over and should be treated as we formerly treated Cuba.
