There have been a few reports out there that Comey was fired when he was out of town so that Trump's people had the opportunity to clean out Comey’s office, and therefore any evidence contained therein. Given that Comey is obviously unbalanced, judging by his recent testimony, there is no telling what they found.

It was reported that the order to fire Comey was personally delivered to the FBI by Trump’s personal security lead. Suppose Comey’s files, hard drives, etc were inventoried and lock-boxed for the next FBI director to sieve through.
