Energy stored in typical laptop batteries. It is a LOT.

Laptop ban due to explosives disguised as the battery

The batteries are explosives. Could not find the video but you ought to see what happens if you toss water on one when it’s already burning. BOOM!

Laptop ban due to explosives disguised as the battery. The blast would hopefully be weakened by all the checked baggage in the cargo hold vs. a blast in the passenger cabin.

If anyone had the balls or brains to do so, it would have been done already.

The eventual goal is to get rid of cellphones. That way, they won’t have any more of those embarassing vids posted on youtube.

Very soon, no more laptops as carry-on Very soon, no more international business travel.

The market will adapt. You'll see laptop rental services spring up overnight for international travelers to rent at their destination. You'll see international travelers moving all their computing to the cloud. Airlines will offer non-battery powered devices (for an upgrade fee) to use in flight, together with wifi (another upcharge).

Using a rental laptop won't work for some, so you might also see laptop battery rental kiosks at airports outside the security cordon so that you can rent a battery during your international stay and use the power cable on international flights.

You might also see small computers similar to Raspberry Pi (but likely with more power) become popular. Plug it into the usb port available on seats on international flights and use a separate keyboard.

Finally, you could see airlines requiring separate checking of laptops to be placed in secure cargo holds with fire suppression built in. Also much more expensive, increasing ticket prices, but if the regulation happens the airlines will do whatever they can to keep international business travel.

All of this sucks, but people will travel to do business and they'll figure out a way around it.

While that will be annoying, it makes sense. Most people have no idea about the amount of energy stored in typical laptop batteries. It is a LOT.

A laptop battery fire could easily expand to a cabin fire. At 35,000 feet, the entire cabin would be filled with a toxic cloud, and depending on how long it took to put it out would likely making the cabin air unbreathable. I'd be irritated at the inconvenience, but it would be a disaster if it happened. And we're packing more and more power into batteries at the same time processor power and peripheral power demands grow, placing more stress on batteries.

Soon no more laptops as checked baggage either. Dangerous lithium batteries.

Just stop with the carry on. In the event of a plane crash, if it was survivable, most likely your neck would be broken when the overhead bins break loose and fall on your head.
Try checking your luggage sometime. It makes you laugh at those struggling with bags.

Great idea.
Make passengers put their laptops in the checked luggage where the baggage-smashers can steal them.
Oh, and make the passengers PAY for that checked luggage.

Laptop rentals? Like, who needs a personal computer right?☺

I am so glad I have zero need to travel.

Ya couldn't take me to an airport in a complementary, fully stocked presidential limo.

This isn't going to sit well with all the business travelers who work on the planes.

Also, the airlines removed all the entertainment systems and now offer "personal" entertainment that uses your own tablets and computers on their wifi. What will happen if all the personal electronics are banned, leaving the airlines with no entertainment revenue?

This will be just another way for airlines to make money.

They will rent you one of theirs.

Pretty soon, to avoid the risk of terrorists on board planes, passengers will be banned.
