SEOUL: North Korea accused the United States on Tuesday of pushing the Korean peninsula to the brink of nuclear war after a pair of strategic U.S. bombers flew training drills with the South Korean and Japanese air forces in another show of strength.
The two supersonic B-1B Lancer bombers were deployed amid rising tensions over North Korea's dogged pursuit of its nuclear and missile programmes in defiance of United Nations sactions and pressure from the United States.
The flights of the two bombers on Monday came as U.S. President Donald Trump said he was open to meeting North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in the right circumstances, and as his CIA director landed in South Korea for talks.
South Korean Defence Ministry spokesman Moon Sang-gyun told a briefing in Seoul that Monday's joint drill was conducted to deter provocations by the North and to test readiness against another potential nuclear test.
The U.S. air force said in a statement the bombers had flown from Guam to conduct training exercises with the South Korean and Japanese air forces.
North Korea said the bombers conducted "a nuclear bomb dropping drill against major objects" in its territory at a time when Trump and "other U.S. warmongers are crying out for making a preemptive nuclear strike" on the North.
"The reckless military provocation is pushing the situation on the Korean peninsula closer to the brink of nuclear war," the North's official KCNA news agency said on Tuesday.

I’m not speaking gibberish.
He won’t use them. He’ll just threaten to use them and our weak Congress and weak leaders around the world will capitulate and give him food and money to keep the party going.
They’ve been doing that all along for years haven’t they?
Yes, but ICBMs will give him more leverage. But I seriously doubt the “He will use them.”
That would be suicide, he knows it, the world knows it. But we’ll capitulate. We always do. Seoul is held hostage by artillery, and once the ICBMs work we won’t be able to do a damned thing.
I’m not saying we shouldn’t stop them from developing ICBMs. I’m just saying they won’t be used even if fully functional. They’ll be used as leverage which is bad enough. So stop them now.
So for decades all those countries you mentioned have all been blackmailed by Norks threats, right?
Dude. Il did it, and Un is doing it. It’s their playbook. Get sanctions lifted, get payouts, food for the loyalists, and then they stop rattling the saber. A few years later they start rattling the saber again. It’s been a cycle for years and years. How can you not see that?
Ok so all these countries have been blackmailed by North Korea for decades. Go it.
Tell me, what better to blackmail with than a nuke?
That’s why he wants them. Seriously, he knows if he used one that would be it. The entire world would bomb NK, and everyone would agree that it was the right thing to do.
So it’s cool if he has the ultimate chip? Should we stand by and allow him to developed delivery systems capable of carrying nuke payloads?
Take your time...
No. I said we should stop him.
I said he won’t actually use them if he gets them though.
If he used a nuke on any city it would be the world vs NK.
Everyone would throw their bombs at NK. It’s a MAD world.
OTOH if he does get ICBMs he can threaten all he wants. Call the bluff every-time.
We agree there. Kinda of a no brainer huh?
I said he wont actually use them if he gets them though.
Since you have no idea what he'll do, I would again vote to kill him and take out his offensive assets.
He does have nuclear weapons that are working. I’m sure the Norks have planes. If he really wanted to he could use one.
He hasn’t. He won’t. It would be suicide. He knows that.
You don’t stay leader of a country, successfully build nuclear weapons, and extort the free world by being insane and stupid.
Should we stand by and allow him to developed delivery systems capable of carrying nuke payloads?
I said we shouldn’t.
But if we don’t, he will get them, and it will be even harder to take care of it then.
OK, so once again, we’re in agreement, we need to take out the psycho with the big mouth.
Take care.
I think we can do this diplomatically. But maybe not.
Have we ever engaged NK seriously diplomatically?
