It's the biggest Japanese warship since WWII because the biggest Japanese warship of WWII was dispatched by the U.S. Navy.

>Likewise its sister ship, the Musashi...sunk by Halsey. Yamato and Musashi, the two biggest battleships, and biggest main guns, ever built. Both dispatched by the US Navy.
Too bad Japan wasn't allowed to keep their subs. Their I-400 class subs were 390 feet long, longer than the largest American subs of WWII. Similar in concept to the helo carriers, the I-400 submarines carried three war planes inside and could surface to launch them and inflict damage to an enemy. They were all captured intact after surrender by the USA, and sunk by torpedoes after being inspected by the USA. Some were sunk off Hawaii to keep them from Russian eyes. For this reason, they were all destroyed to keep the Russians from getting the technology.
