Writhing and gasping: AP reporters view problem executions
The Associated Press ^ | Apr. 28, 2017 | The Associated Press

The sedative midazolam is supposed to prevent condemned prisoners from suffering while they die, but opponents say several problematic executions involving the drug are evidence that it does not work consistently. They raised new concerns after an execution Thursday in Arkansas left the prisoner convulsing and pressing against his restraints.

It seems many of the people who are anti-death penalty are pro-euthanasia. Ironic, isn’t it?

leftists are only pro-life if you're a criminal.

Firing squads have none of the problems of lethal injection, and are legally sound. States just need to write a law that both authorizes them as a legal means, and add to it that if other means are unavailable, the execution will default to the firing squad.

This will help a lot to discourage frivolous appeals, and judges who refuse to permit executions because they just don’t like them.

I think that they are trying to use drugs which have a minimum amount of time between unrecoverable and dead. If a dog is given a drug which will take five minutes to kill him but once injected there is no way to stop him from painlessly dying, there is not a problem because there isn't going to be a last minute call from the governor to stop it.

With condemned criminals there are far too many last minute reprieves (why can't the governor or judge make up his mind by 5pm?). Thus the drugs aim to first knock the criminal out, but still be perfectly recoverable if the order to stop is given. Then a drug to stop his heart quickly to minimize the time between injection and death.

Using this requirement, the guillotine is probably the best method. Everything is stoppable until the blade is dropped and a second or two later he's unrecoverably dead.

“Somehow dogs are put down without writhing and gasping.
And the shot is affordable.
So what am I missing?”

Maybe that shot is not FDA approved for use in people?

I know they were afraid the drug they did use was about to expire.

Yes, I know. Sounds crazy to me also.

Problematic executions = oxymoron

Now if he didn’t die, THAT would be problematic.

The guy’s dead, right?

Somehow, I’m not seeing the “problem” aspect.

Who cares if the reporters are writhing and gasping while watching an execution? Give them a barf bag.

All the attempts to “humanize” executions have failed. The electric chair, the gas chamber, and now drugs do not make the process more “humane”, in fact, they prolong the process and are subject, rightly, to the constitutional bar on cruelty.

If society cannot bear beheading, hanging, or shooting, then capital punishment should be abolished.

Writhing and gasping?

They might as well start getting used to it unless they've repented and called upon the Lord.

An execution could be administered as humanely and flawlessly as possible and the MSM will report that it had “problems.”

That’s what gets me. The suffering endured by the victim is never considered by the MSM. I think there was all sorts of hand-wringing and appeals when Ted Bundy finally met his Maker.

Not always. My last dog didn’t go as peacefully as the one before. There are no guarantees that the reaction will be the same for everyone.

For all we know, the person is not writhing because of the injection but because he can see where he are going.

Utterly ridiculous reporting. “Writhing and gasping” indeed. They are unconscious. Anyone ever have a colonoscopy or other so-called “conscious sedation” procedure? In spite of the official term, you lose consciousness within seconds. You are aware of nothing. These evil men didn’t suffer. Not that I would care if they did.

How is it that a vet can peacefully and efficiently knock off a bus load of dogs and cats every day with a couple of simple injections, but we somehow find ourselves unable to find our way out the door of a one-hole restroom when it comes to sending miscreants to their deserved eternal destination?

Every time there's an execution we have to read these inflammatory articles about the "horrors" of the condemned man's last gasps.

If they're so concerned about a merciful death, all they have to do is put a .45 slug in the back of his head. One second he's alive; the next he's singing with the Pitchfork Choir. It's quick, it's merciful, it's painless, and it's just.

So shut up about the "writhing and gasping." A merciful death is more than most of these vermin deserve.
