Trump is prepared: 'If there's a shutdown, there's a shutdown'

With less than 24 hours before the government runs out of money, precipitating a partial shutdown of services, President Donald Trump et the Democrats know that there are limits to what he and the Republican Congress will accept to keep the government operating.

Democrats have bee piling up conditions under which they would agree to a budget resolution that would fund the government through September 30. But the difficulty of the negotiations have forced Hill Republicans to offer a one week extension of funding to keep the government operating.

But if Democrats won't accept the stop gap measure, the president is prepared for a government shut down.

Reuters:

"We'll see what happens. If there's a shutdown, there's a shutdown," Trump told Reuters in an interview, adding that Democrats would be to blame if the federal government was left unfunded.

Congress has until 12:01 a.m. ET on Saturday to pass a bill to fund the government or face a shutdown, which would temporarily lay off hundreds of thousands of federal workers.

Republicans introduced a bill on Wednesday to fund government operations at current levels for one more week, giving them time to finish negotiations with Democrats on the plan for the rest of the fiscal year ending Sept. 30.

Trump said a shutdown would be a "very negative thing" but that his administration was prepared if it was necessary.

In a wide-ranging interview, he defended the one-page tax plan he unveiled on Wednesday from criticism that it would increase the U.S. deficit, saying better trade deals and economic growth would offset the costs.

"We will do trade deals that are going to make up for a tremendous amount of the deficit.

What if President Trump shut down the Department of Education, the EPA, the Bureau of Land Management, BATFE (except for Class III approvals), foreign aid, refugee resettlement, reviews for foreign visas, and a whole bunch of other agencies that do nothing urgent (or perhaps not even useful)?

All the non-essential agencies except DOE, DOD, Treasury.

What if they held a government shut down and no productive Americans cared?

“Shut it down....send everyone home.”

And social security pensioners don’t have to worry: that’s mandatory spending. Programs that are required by existing law are paid as a matter of law.

What we’re arguing over is discretionary spending, e.g. a lot of us are fed up with subsidizing infanticide and “public” news services that constantly deride the right.

National defense/border security is—or should be—mandatory spending.
Yes, and make the “non-essentials” stay at “work”. They can surf porn at home as well as at work, so they can pretend to work and we keep the printing presses churning out fiat money and pretend to pay them.

In a shutdown the first thing closed should be office that write paychecks to Congress and the State Department.

Seriously?

It’s vacation time in Fedsville:

“Lawmakers have introduced various pieces of legislation to make sure federal employees receive compensation if furloughed for any period of time where there’s a lapse in appropriations.

Reps. Don Beyer (D-Va.) and Rob Wittman (R-Va.) introduced the Federal Employee Retroactive Pay Fairness Act, which will guarantee that federal employees receive back pay in the event Congress can’t come to an agreement on a funding solution by April 28.”

Trump has a golden opportunity here! Trump can say “Hey look! We can see during the shutdown which government programs and employees are truly essential and those that aren’t! This will greatly aid us in establishing our priorities when we present our 2018 Government Reduction Act and accompanying budget next year!” Once the voters actually see how much government that they can live without the effectiveness of media/democrat scare stories will diminish.

Neither Trump or the Washington Repubs would ever have the balls to do this. As much as I hate Odumbo, he deliberately targeted conservative or military memorials, or federal parks, even the Mississippi backwaters to prohibit fishing. Also he targets the scenic roadside stops for Mt Rushmore, so you couldn't even stop to take pictures. Odumbo has an evil satanic slant, but he never let that stop him. Trump needs to double down and make the liberals & judges hurt deeply in case of a shutdown.

Seriously?

Why wouldn't I be?

What do you think “furlough” means?

“What do you think “furlough” means?”

It means “the gubmint is shut down, so let’s go home whining about how there will be no paycheck... oh, wait, there will be paycheck, silly me! It is practically a paid vacation.”

No.

FURLOUGH—The placement of an employee in a temporary nonpay status and nonduty status (or absence from duty) because of lack of work or funds, or for other nondisciplinary reasons.

They simply need to keep the government ‘shut down’ IE running on revenue with only he department Trumps picks being funded for a few months before the departments Trump doesn’t favor like the EPA. IRS, and ATF end up losing large shares of their FTE who find other jobs to pay their bills.

Then if Congress does agree to trumps plans trump gets to pick conservative replacements.

The Deep leftist State will become a deep conservative state.

I agree, government shut down is Donald Trump’s most important ‘trump card’.

Conservatives would be happy to keep the government shut down, while liberals would break within a few months less these departments end up with most of their FTE’s quiting, leaving thier spots to be filled by Trump’s conservative hire replacements.

If trump believes he can run the U.S. Government on revenue this is his most ideal way to do precisely that, and demand from congress whatever else he wants.

Prove to us it can be done, and get rid of half the useless Government agencies in the process. Let the Democrats and the media freak.

You know that ain’t true. They are getting paid vacations, which is what furloughs should be called. If one is being honest.

You know that only thing that is more despicable than the deep leftist State is there deep so-called conservative dwwp State. You can’t be a conservative if you’re a statist.

The Libs will get some hand-picked judge from somewhere to tell the fed how and where to spend the money. Judges have really stepped up the illegal and unconstitutional legislating-from-the-bench lately.

The key to getting liberals to accept liberty over big government is making that big government disagreeable to them long term.

Strategically they will embrace any means to power and if that means giving themselves and their successors the power to destroy Government they will do that too. We are not talking about a basis of deep thinking people but rather emotional ideologues who will convene themselves of nothing.

In any event we would continue to argue that the government should remain shut down but when congress forces our hand, we will make the replacement something they don’t like. Thus making it easier to leave it shut down.
