Maxine Waters: ‘92 L.A. Rebellion Was A ‘Defining Moment’ For Black Resistance
The Huffington Post's Black Voices ^ | April 27, 2017 | Taryn Finley

It’s been 25 years since the Los Angeles rebellion, but Rep. Maxine Waters remembers it like it was just yesterday.

The California Democrat was traveling on business when Rodney King was brutally beaten by LAPD officers on March 3, 1991. She told HuffPost that she remembers watching the footage from her hotel bed.

“I sat straight up and all I could say, ‘Oh, my god! Oh, my god! Look at this,’” Waters said. She and black Americans across the country shared the same outrage.

King, who was pulled over after a high-speed chase with the LAPD, was released from jail without being charged. But black people’s anger increased as they witnessed the 17 cops who did nothing but watch as their colleagues beat King walk free. The residents of Los Angeles reached their boiling point on April 29, 1992, however, when a mostly white jury acquitted the four white cops who assaulted King. That is when the city rebelled....

I remember it like it was yesterday too. And I'm still pissed off about it.

I watched the documentary “Lost Tapes - L.A. Riots” on the Smithsonian. There is plenty of video out there. I almost threw up when I watched what they did to Reginald Denny. Those riots were worse than you remember.

The 92 riots?

It was just a matter of time.

Like earthquakes. They’re periodic.

Rodney King was the immediate catalyst but the “seismic” pressures had been building for a couple years. The Beulah Love shooting was still fresh in people’s minds. As well as the case of the Korean liquor store owner who shot a shoplifter in the bad of the head as the perp was walking out the door — and got away with it.

For the next couple years there were guys standing on sidewalks selling random stuff that was almost certainly looted. Even on Figueroa near 7th!

Maxine seems to be in the news almost everyday. There seems to be a concerted effort to keep her in the public eye and build awareness of her.

What is the real agenda of the Democrat Party and the progressive media with respect to giving this one California representative an abundance of national exposure? Given her age it certainly isn’t a matter of conditioning the public to see her as a viable national candidate. It isn’t promoting her as a candidate for US Senate since both California senators are entrenched. She is unlikely at her age to run to replace Governor Moonbeam. Other politicians, with potential for future office, would die for the amount of media airtime she is receiving. She doesn’t make profound statements, in fact much of what she says is a turnoff to many people the DNC needs to bring into the fold. Why Maxine versus a young rising minority politician?

Rebellion? Rebellion my ass, it was a RIOT! It was all the animals in the zoo given an excuse to rampage, pillage loot and assault innocent bystanders. The Korean merchants dealt with it in exactly the right way, with an armed defense and I was prepared in the same way.

leave it to an ignorant, partisan racist to call it a rebellion to try to legitimize it.

My brother-in-law was an LA county fireman at that time. He said they got shot at and that all they could do was knock down the big flames and let the home and shop owners put the small stuff out themselves. The people were very grateful and brought them cokes and hamburgers. He also said that about the only shops that weren’t looted were bookstores. Go figure.
