A, being Dao planned to be seriously injured, which would have been the only way to break more than even—with that being a longshot—under the circumstances.

B, Dao didn’t want to be injured, and therfore wasn’t attempting any kind of scam.

No thanks. Instead I will pick C. Dao wanted to create an altercation and be forcibly removed, kicking and screaming, from the plane. And of course that is just what happened. What he didn’t anticipate (and the security agents probably didn’t either) is what commonly happens in physical altercations: PEOPLE GET INJURED.

Sans injury, there was no scam. If an uninjured Dao had tried to sue the airline, his legal fees would have exceeded any money he *might* have won. He’d have likely lost that lawsuit, however, so ALL he’d have gained is a massive legal bill—which is hardly anything that could be called a ‘scam.’
