United Airlines Passenger Was Violent in Removal, Police Report Says

Newly released police documents claim that Dr. David Dao, the passenger who was shown being dragged off a United Airlines flight on April 9 in widely shared videos, behaved violently toward the officers removing him, but his lawyer dismissed this account as “utter nonsense.”

The phone videos taken by other passengers set off waves of criticism and multiple statements from the airline, each more apologetic than the last.

The police reports were released Monday afternoon in response to a freedom of information request filed by The New York Times and other news organizations. The releases included audio of the original call to the Chicago Department of Aviation police, personnel reports about the officers and an incident report that appeared to blame Dr. Dao for his own injuries.

The only reason Dao is looking at a big payday is because he was seriously injured.

Ah,but the fact you've missed (or intentionally failed to mention) is that his injuries were the result of his own *breathtakingly* foolish,irresponsible,*violent* behavior.If he had walked off that aircraft *calmly* when instructed to do so,as I would have done in that very situation (don't know about *you*),no injuries would have occurred.

Now if you could just get the United Pilots Union to agree that the level of force used was acceptable:

Dao did none of this prior to being head slammed/brain injured on the armrest.

I didn't see anything in the video about slamming his head so hard as to cause a concussion. I will wait and let an expert witness tell us that in court. I googled this morning and I was unable to find a doctor's report on Dao's head injuries. His lawyers are claiming a concussion as far a I can tell If their is official medial reports out their let us know.

Did Dao and his wife orginally deplane only to return after finding out there wasn’t another
flight that day? I read that in one of the aritcles but don’t know if it was true.

I read an article that detailed the Flight Attendants’ reaction. They all agreed thst Dao should have been removed. However, they were apoplectic about the way the thugs slamned Dao’s head into the armrest. They pointed out that it’s trivial to put the armrest into its upright position, which would have removed it as a barrier.

Now who should I side with? The FAs who 100% backed Dao’s removal, but were appalled by the force with which his head was slammed (totally unnecessarily) into the armrest...

United GROSSLY violated their own Terms of Service in removing Dao.

Not that you’ll care. In your world, the ToS are made to be trashed any time they fail to serve United’s quest to save a couple of hundred dollars (in monopoly money).

Sadly for United, they also GROSSLY violated the federal laws for Common Carriers. Their goose is cooked.

There was no purposely slamming his head into an arm rest. Those security guys knew there were 10 cell phone videos being made. They were aggressive but they would not slam his head on propose.

As far as injures to Dao, there are 2 possibilities.

Possibility No 1:

Dao received a broken nose, a concussion and was actually unconscious.

Possibility No. 2:

Dao got a simple bloody nose, no concussion and faked unconsciousness.

There is no way to determine the truth from the videos. I will wait for the facts to come out. Maybe you should too.

I am not saying Dao was not wronged. All I am saying is that all parties involved could be at fault. Dao could be a fraud, faking unconsciousness and played up a "lucky" simple bloody nose to look pathetic. That doesn't excuse the rough handling by the security either, and it doesn't let UAL off the hook. All I am saying is Dao could be a fraud and still be the MORE harmed party. This is not a simple case.

2 of those 3 security guards said they wrote their reports under duress and only did so under fear of losing their jobs. Interestingly, they were not the ones who yanked Dr Dao.

That was Ofc. Long, and he wrote no such disclaimer. He is so screwed.

Very good point and well stated. Security isn’t going to start using physical force on a compliant passenger. He was obviously resisting, and probably quite aggressively, for security to respond in the way they did.

Both the videos and his fellow passengers say Dao was not belligerent. He was sitting in his assigned seat and made no aggressive moves. One passenger, whose letter about the incident was printed in the Chicago Tribune, says one of the three thugs was laughing as he roughed Dao up.

Not all security guards are the apex of professionalism.

You missed the part that said Dao was finally released from the hospital. His lawyer was going by the medical reports of the drs that treated Dao.

Yep that paragon of impartiality the pilot’s union has weighed in and surprise they made sure everyone knew it was a “contracted” carrier. Then they hammer the police. As if there is some peaceful no forceful way of removing a passenger. Now if it had been a United flight, not Republic, and an pilot ordered the passenger off, it would all be justified. Just your friendly pilot’s union looking out for us all.
