Fox News normally ranks #1 among cable news channels. But lately MSNBC's Rachel Maddow has been challenging Fox at 9 p.m., the centerpiece of the prime time schedule.
"The Rachel Maddow Show" surpassed "Tucker Carlson Tonight" in March among 25- to 54-year-old viewers, the demographic that determines advertising rates. Maddow was on track to win again in April. But on Monday night the cable news ratings race changed dramatically. Carlson moved from 9 p.m. to 8, replacing Bill O'Reilly, and Fox's 5 p.m. talk show "The Five" moved to 9.
Maddow may or may not benefit from the change. Regardless, executives all across television news have already taken notice of her recent wins. According to Nielsen data, Maddow also narrowly topped Fox's 8 p.m. hour last week, when Dana Perino and Greg Gutfeld filled in for O'Reilly.
Maddow's surge is being fueled partly by her day-in, day-out criticism of the Trump administration. There is an increased appetite for the liberal arguments she has been making for years.
"There's a reason Rachel is beating Fox and CNN," MSNBC president Phil Griffin told CNNMoney in an email. "She's a talented storyteller who's helping her audience cut through all the confusion coming out of Washington. She's connecting dots in ways no one else is."

Fox viewers are tuning out so thier ratings are plummeting.
Well, not unreasonable to think all the hard left activists are taping her show whether they watch it or not. Still drives up ratings and gets a solid chunk of viewers accounted for.
Although 9pm has been off my radar for a while, Megyn then Tucker, neither of whom I like.
If Maddow is at 200 and stays at 200 while Fox goes from 400 to 150, I am not sure I would call that Maddow winning.
I think Tucker's been off his game in recent weeks and I was not overly impressed with his 8PM debut last night. Hopefully he'll improve and find his stride. Too early to judge the 9PM hour but it was a mixed bag last night. Hannity (when I can stay up late enough to watch him) is solid as a rock.
We need a true conservative cable news network. FoxNews overall is not cutting it. I do like the Fox & Friends in the morning - I listen to them when I can. They are solid Trump supporters.
Bob Beckel is a fat old fool. He's totally without class and spews his bigotry and poor prognostications and obviously gets on the other hosts' nerves for being such a jerk. I saw a clip of him the other day how he on national television unequivocally claimed and predicted that the 'election was over' once the Access Hollywood tape came out. We saw how that turned out.
Rachael Mancow will be revealing Trump’s tax returns from 1985.
I’m afraid the Fox owners (Murdoch’s son) are hellbent on neutering Fox as we know it and turning into another pile of leftist mush. I wish Hannity, Carlson, Watters, and O’Reilly and the Koch Brothers would start a new cable network.
THE FIVE was unwatchable at 5:00PM and doesn't belong in the 9:00 PM time slot at all. So from at least 8:00 PM - 10:00PM, FOX has now screwedthepooch and is SOL!
I think you got it. I do not watch any of it, so get my info about it all second hand. Fox is clearly imploding, and mere % points do not necessarily equal more viewers, just less on one side being quite plausible.
Nope, they should just dump it completely!
FNC now has THE worst night lineup ever.
But The Five brings us that voice of calm and reason, Bob Beckel, and for that alone, they should be commended, < /sarcasm >
I watch FBN, and that is even loosing me.
Tucker's show STINKS ON ICE and that's why few, of any age, are watching it...at any time slot.
BS. CNN writes about cherry picking a demo group and has nothing to back it up.
Did she surge or did Fox drop and her numbers stayed the same?
SPOT ON !
Fox, not their (former) viewers is responsible for their losses.
If they want their market and share back, they know what to do.
In what way is this “the Trump era”? Seems more like the Murdoch sons era if reports that they are making more decisions concerning Fox News are correct.
FOX is MSNBC-Lite, so the conservatives aren’t bothering and the liberals want something with teeth.
Firing O’Reilly, who wasn’t even conservative, will be seen as the final blow.
