AFGE president calls for Congress to pass budget to keep government open past April 28
WASHINGTON J. David Cox Sr., national president of the American Federation of Government Employees, the nations largest federal employee union, today called on Congress to pass a federal budget and keep the government open for business.
Congress shouldnt be playing chicken with funding federal programs and services that veterans, seniors, and other hardworking people rely on, Cox said. In a government shutdown, its the American people who pay the price.
Unless Congress passes legislation to fund the government past April 28, when the current continuing resolution expires, federal agencies will be forced to shut down most operations.
The casualties during a government shutdown are endless, Cox said. There will be no more federal loans issued to small businesses or new home buyers. Federal research into cures for cancer or other deadly diseases will abruptly end. No more applications will be accepted for new Social Security cards, veterans benefits, and housing assistance. Our national parks, monuments, and museums will be forced to close.
Cox also called on Congress to reject a White House proposal to cut $18 billion from federal agency budgets this fiscal year.
The administration wants to slash funding for programs that help Americans find affordable housing, protect our environment, educate our children, and deliver mental and public health services to millions, Cox said. Those who need our help the most would be hit the hardest by these cuts.
*** “Last shutdown, they closed down the Mount Vernon parking lot, until they were told that the gubmint does not own George Washingtons home” ***
AND Nobodies A$$ got kicked (to me that was the saddest part), the USA has become such a bunch of wusses or fearful of the Government.
Shut it DOWN!
Prior to a dubious legal ruling by Carter’s AG Griffin Bell, federal employees continued to go about their business when these “budget arguments” occurred. They were considered not part of the “political process/argument” so irrelevant. Bell deliberately “politicized” the budget process by inserting them into it. I call his ruling “dubious” because I can’t find anywhere that the USSC has ruled on it. In those pre-Carter days only the standing administration “near & dear” programs and budget actions were held and not executed until the “political smoke” had cleared.
I think 1997 with a Newt managed Congress was the last passed & signed true budget. Prior to that was sometime in the Carter years. In place of true budgets we have had these CRs which I also think are also Constitutionally dubious!
“GOP WILL BE BLAMED BUT THAT WILL BE THE LAST SHUTDOWN IF DEMOCRATES WORKING FOR US KNOW THE SCAM IS OVER.”
It would be Trump’s ‘Reagan moment’ if he told them “No. You do NOT get paid for work you are not doing!”
Hell - they put up barriers in roadside stopping areas to try to keep folks from viewing Mount Rushmore....
