When I was stationed in Europe in the 90s, Sky TV was owned by Murdoch. I had a sat receiver and got a card from a friend stationed at RAF Mildenhall.
Lots of funny stuff with encryption back then. Sky TV was VERY popular with American GIs and their families as it not only had 40 plus English-speaking Channels, but as being owned by the guy who owned Fox, it meant you could watch real time episodes of all the latest Fox shows like the Simpsons, Married with Children, 21 Jump Street, the X-Files with Mulder and Scully, etc. The British encrypted it, and the Germans worked furiously to decrypt it and sell the decrypted cards for big bucks (or should I say Marks?) and then the Brits would change the algorithms, and every Ami TV in Germany would go belly up until the Germans decrypted THAT, and so on and so forth.
Since I had a buddy in the UK, and he didn’t watch TV, I signed up for the service there using his address, and he’d mail me any updated encryption card as soon as they sent it to him. I’d usually get my card a day or two BEFORE they changed.
So, long story short, my wife stayed happy, and we all kept up with the latest Fox crap!
As an aside, I just realized how long ago that was, and the Simpsons are STILL a show. If they were real, Bart would be, what, 35-40 years old?
