Graham’s Deranged Idea for Attacking North Korea
The American Conservative ^ | 4-20-2017 | Daniel Larison

Posted on 04/22/2017 4:43:45 AM PDT by Colonel Kangaroo

Lindsey Graham outdoes himself in warmongering with a new call for attacking North Korea:

“Would you be for a preemptive strike?” Today Show host Willie Geist asked the South Carolina Republican. “If that’s what it would take,” Graham replied resolutely.

“It would be terrible but the war would be over here (there), wouldn’t be here,” Graham continued. “It would be bad for the Korean Peninsula. It would be bad for China. It would be bad for Japan, be bad for South Korea. It would be the end of North Korea. But what it would not do is hit America [bold mine-DL] and the only way it could ever come to America is with a missile.”

Graham routinely supports the most irresponsible, dangerous, and immoral policies, so it is not surprising that he is in favor of doing this. The striking thing about his answer is how cavalier he is about calling for starting a war that he admits would be disastrous for everyone in the region. Leave aside that he completely forgets about the tens of thousands of Americans stationed in South Korea that would come under immediate attack in retaliation for the so-called “preemptive strike” he wants. Note that the action he’s talking about wouldn’t actually be “preemptive,” but would be an unprovoked attack and the start of a major war. Leave it to Graham to find a way to find a North Korea policy so horrible that it puts the U.S. in the wrong.

The senator casually contemplates a course of action that would likely lead to the deaths of hundreds of thousands of people and destabilize the region for years to come and he shrugs it off by saying the war “wouldn’t be here.” It doesn’t shock me that a professional warmonger doesn’t care about the effects of this preferred policies, but it is a bit of a surprise that he is so open about his callous disregard for the lives of civilians and soldiers in South Korea and Japan who would pay the price for the act of aggression he supports. The next time you hear Graham feign concern for lives lost in some foreign conflict or pretend to be on the side of our allies, remember this answer and realize that his only desire is to get the U.S. into more unnecessary wars regardless of the consequences.

Graham doesn’t mind if Seoul is reduced to rubble as long as he gets a war.

Graham retained his seat with 55% of the vote in South Carolina. McCain won in Arizona by 53%. People in those states need to do some serious soul searching.

As much as I can’t stand Gram, he is TOTALLY RIGHT here. They have HYDROGEN BOMBS and have put satellites IN ORBIT - how many cities must we lose before it’s ok to endanger a few of their civilians?

Gram is full of Shiite in the Middle East, but he’s dead-on here.

Thanks...I’m usually no defender of Gram, but I take everyone on every issue separately. The Dems were COUNTING ON GRAM to prevent the Gorsuch filibuster from being nuked, and Gram didn’t even waffle - he told the stunned Leftists at his town hall to f-off and that he was all-in for pulling the trigger. It was more than just doing one for Mitch, he was genuinely raring to go on that one. So maybe some hope there - if he stays this good on judges, I’ll give him a really wide berth elsewhere.

As to this, it’s important to NOT think that MAD applies to every 3rd World Tin Pot. Eventually (and sooner, rather than later), his demands will increase and increase (food, money, fuel, etc.) until they reach a breaking point...he’s not going to stop if he has blackmail capability - so might as well get it over with now.

I agree. Nuke the hell out of the NORKS and get it over with. THEN tell Iran they are NEXT of they don’t behave.

Fine.

What’s your solution?

Kim is threatening nuclear war with the United States, and is pursuing the means to do it out in the open.

Previously, he was being assisted in this by both Russia and China.

At what point, in your mind, do we start believing heads of state, or heads of terrorist groups, when they say they want to kill the United States?

We’ve clearly cut a deal with China recently on the subject. We’ve made it clear that if they aren’t willing to control the countries in their orbit making these sorts of threats and devoting outsized resources to trying to make them real, then eventually - regardless of the permanent damage its going to do to South Korea, Japan and China, not to mention the Little Tigers, then we will have to do it.

More to the point, SO WOULD CHINA, OR RUSSIA, IF THEY WERE IN OUR SHOES.

As such, when, in your opinion, should we do it?

Is it your opinion that Seattle or SF is expendable? Frankly, one could make a tempting argument there, but what about San Diego or Hawaii? How about Bremerton, WA (lots of subs)?

The line being drawn here is do we let NK have nukes when they’ve declared why they want them?

You know the irony of your ‘unattainable’ claim:

The US has a lot of first place ribbons - first to flight, first to the moon, etc.

You know that the US is the only civilization in the entire history of mankind not to fully exploit a clear, singular, technical military advantage when it had the chance to use it?

For four years, the US was the only country with nuclear weapons. Every other major civilization used its military advantage out of MORAL COMPULSION - it was IMMORAL not to take fully military advantage in order to protect its own people and fully wipe out its enemies when they had the opportunity to do so.

There are no more Carthaginians, Lombards, Picts, or Goths in the world because this moral argument was well understood by the Romans. You HAD to wipe out your enemies and salt their land because you had a duty to your own people to do so.

That was until the United States of America. We are the only civilization to reject this obligation to dispatch its enemies completely while she had the means to do so.

There IS absolute security from enemies, and there may be that security available when the next clear technical military advantage is developed (genetic agents that only kill Russians while innoculating your allies from it perhaps?).

The US is the only, the first, country to REJECT the moral argument for the extermination of external threats when in possession of the means to do so.

The NK can’t preempt us, but in this case we have the moral responsibility to our own citizens to preempt Kim, and China knows this, as do the Russians (who are not nearly as smart as anyone makes them - clever? you bet - not smart).

The Israelis have made the same argument about Muslims for years. At what point will we take THEM seriously? AFTER they’ve developed nuclear weapons?

Exactly. NK is directly threatening us with its nuclear weapons. It must give them up or be destroyed, without any costly conventional war.
