75% saltpeter AKA `niter’ or potassium nitrate: sold in garden stores as “Stump Killer”
15% charcoal (Kingsford grilling briquettes); and
10% sulfur (soil additive to acidify soil: also sold in garden stores).

The charcoal to use is the natural charcoal sold under names like “Cowboy Charcoal.” It’s pure charred wood with a proper carbon content and, when burned, leaves little residue. Kingsford, OTOH, is partly coal dust and partly fillers and adhesive, causing it to leave a huge amount of waste after burning and to combust badly when used in gunpowder. Use the good stuff. Long, long ago when I was in HS I tried to make black powder using Kingsford. My product was horrible. Never trie to make it since, but looks like the “Cowboy Charcoal” would work a lot better.
