Been shooting Garand since in was but a wee lad and hasn’t happened before but, there’s always tomorrow....
Pretty sure you need ice after that.
The spring is pretty powerful, which is why it rarely fails.
Once you learn the trick to safely releasing the bolt, you’re home free.
(From Open Bolt, Pull Charging Handle to the rear using the heal of your right hand. Depress Follower slightly with thumb and let Charging handle move slightly forward. LIFT thumb out of the way. Fully release Charging Handle.)
While I’ve Qualified with the M-14, I’ve never fired a Garand. I did tote one in high school ROTC from 1962 through 1965. I was VERY careful and never got an “M-1 Thumb” in all the inspections we had.
After hearing that bolt slam home the first time, I took the hint!
