Trump defends decision not to hit runway on Syrian airbase

By ERIN DOOLEY Apr 8, 2017, 5:14 PM ET

Following reports that two Syrian jets took off from the airfield hit by U.S. missiles Thursday night, President Trump defended his decision not to strike the runway.

"The reason you don't generally hit runways is that they are easy and inexpensive to quickly fix (fill in and top)!" the commander-in-chief tweeted.

According to one U.S. official, initial assessments indicate that up to 20 Syrian aircraft were destroyed after the U.S. hit Syria's al Shayrat airbase with more than 50 Tomahawk cruise missiles Thursday. However, the runway -- as well as storage areas suspected to contain chemical weapons -- remained untouched.

“You’re being way too optomistic — In California, it would take millions of dollars and years just for planning and gettting approvals for the repair. The repair would then take additional millions and years to complete. “

Thanks for correcting my overly positive comments about Cal Trans.

We have craters in our local hiways that have been there since the first heavy Noah rains in late November.

My wife’s Lexus is very responsive re steering adjustments. So when a tail gater is merging with our rear license plates, and I know where the craters are. I can make evasive moves at the last minute, and the tailgates can’t miss them.

Either they back off or take out one or two tires.

In the Illinois big cities, guys named Mario control the snow removal and road repair with the same franchise you described. Their grand dads passed the franchises down to their heirs.

The snow franchise belonged to Barry's brother in law, until some snowmaggedon in about 1994. Trucks all broken and inoperable and the Corps of Engineers had to clear the roads while Marion flew off to Bermuda for vacation stating "God put the snow there, god can take it away."

Congress took management of the city away from its democratically elected representatives some time after that. Why they gave it back, I don't know, except as a continual reminder of why DC statehood is such a bad idea. Two senators from here?! Seriously?

RE: Old Tomahawks:

At a certain point, if unused, you junk ‘em, or sell ‘em el-cheapo to some $$ poor allies, anyway, right?

As someone pointed out here, next time go in the the hanger doors on fortified hangers.

Tomahawks used a vertical dive manuever to punch through the aircraft structures. Doors aren't always open and VDM is easier to accomplish than level attack.

I wasn't thinking door open but that they would be weaker. Also, I think they have munitions that can punch through a fortified roof but I don't know if they used them. I saw youtubes where Tomahawks seemed to take out concrete buildings with ease.

It's always easy to 2nd guess everything, though!

International whining should have been ignored -- and at least eight of those TLAMs should have dumped Rockeye clusters (with random time-delay fuzes) on the exposed A/C in open sand revetments -- and, even, sitting out on the sand:

Oh, I’m not faulting FDR. I think he was simply being a realist about America’s prospects for staying out of the war.

It would have been a disaster for the free west if England had been conquered by Germany. It was bad enough to see France go.

Anyone familiar with Halford Mackinder’s geographical pivot of history could read the global map. Virtually all of the military knew what it is and I’m sure FDR was familiar with it as well.
