Trump, Xi showdown fails to materialize at Mar-a-Lago (Winning)

What was billed as a showdown between the leaders of the United States and China over trade and North Korea ended with little sign of confrontation Friday — or of concrete progress in resolving their differences.

President Donald Trump had predicted a "very difficult" meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping. After their first face-to-face at the Mar-a-Lago resort, he trumpeted they had developed an "outstanding" relationship.

U.S. officials said the two sides agreed to increase cooperation on trying to get North Korea's to abandon its nuclear weapons program, and China acknowledged the need for more balanced trade with the U.S.

But the two days of meetings appeared heavier on optics than substance. The most powerful message for the Chinese leader may have been Trump's decision to launch U.S. missile strikes at Syria.

Those strikes added weight to Trump's threat last week to act unilaterally against North Korea's weapons program — although a much heavier risk would be required to take military action against the nuclear-armed North, which has its artillery and missiles trained on a key U.S. ally, South Korea.

The U.S. administration's first recourse is very likely to be economic — pushing China to crack down on Chinese banks and companies said to provide North Korea access to the international financial system.

In a possible harbinger of the kind of punishments Washington could inflict, a leading Chinese telecoms company, ZTE, was fined nearly $900 million in March for shipping sensitive U.S.-made technology to Iran in violation of U.S. sanctions.

Trump had a Belgrano moment

Margaret Thatcher showed no reaction after order to sink Belgrano ship during Falklands War, papers reveal

The extraordinary insight comes from a newly released document in which she set down her own account of the 1982 Falklands War

From 140 word tweets to 60 cruse missile strikes.

No focus groups were involved.

Consider Trump at the press conference:

Total control...replies are instantaneous.....direct.....truthful, devastating and unexpected

Same same at the command center.

Xi. ...as in guanxi.

A lot of native English speakers find pronouncing Xi's surname a bit confusing. A friend suggested: "Emperor Eleven" (Roman Numerals, etc.).

President Xi told President Trump that the Taiwanese have been killing beautiful babies who died horrific deaths. President Trump promptly ordered General Mattis to make plans to bomb Taiwan's capital city Taipei into the Stone Age. President Trump will be giving a speech tonight that ends with this sentence -- "God bless the World; except for Assad & Taiwan."

Whatever the expectations and the results, S.K. is hardly "a close ally". It is America's protectorate. No more. No less. It is not likely to "ally" with America and deploy its resources in support of any of America's interests or conflicts elsewhere.

THE DOG THAT DIDN’T BARK...

Usually State meetings produce some pre-agreed-to public relations ‘big deal’. Not sure what to make of the deficiency, but I’m sure it’s significant.

I wonder how much of that was built into the price...
in the end Iran ended up with the sensitive technology.

I don’t think it would be allowed to happen at all
under the new administration.

Most round eyes want to close the deal asap.

It won’t happen.

Having done business for 30 years in Asia, including the China early days, build the relationship and have patience in doing so.

What an idiotic idea, this meeting was not “billed” as a “showdown”.

They weren’t hoping far a Hitler vs Chamberlain hysterical show from Trump. With screaming like a deranged man i.e. like Hitler.

Another reason I despise the media and trust it in NOTHING.

Giddy from winning. Don’t know what the FR nay sayers expected, but Hillery could be president for God’s sake. Everyhing that hasn’t gone our way yet is not done. You know...you can’t always get what you want. Trump is playing with the dems in particular. Humiliating them and they are too dumb to notice. Shumer, Shumer, Shumer? Sh-t is hitting them so fast they cannot keep up. It’s because they are stupid and lazy, just missing fat.

I would like him to give us all 50 state CCW to get us back in the car.

That would be nice. I’m still waiting for that simple little EO.

Somebody (cannot remember who) wrote a few days before the meeting that it was significant that the underlings had NOT been instructed to hammer out some agreement for them to sign. It indicated that this was to be a serious working meeting rather than a diplomatic photo op.

So, this brash fellow we elected seems to know more about subtlety and saving face for one’s opponents than the pseudo elite. There are few skills more worthy than protecting one’s opponent. Well done, President Trump.
