Chelsea Human Rights Commission discusses Freedom Cities Campaign
Chelsea Update ^ | 4/7/17 | Lisa Carolin

At its April 5 meeting, Chelsea’s Human Rights Commission discussed becoming part of the ACLU’s Freedom Cities Campaign. The campaign aims to ensure that local law enforcement officials defend rather than threaten people in the community, in particular immigrants.

The Freedom Cities Campaign is a challenge to President Donald Trump’s travel ban on refugees and his administration’s immigration enforcement in the country.

Chelsea Police Chief Ed Toth attended the meeting and said that the local police do not knock on people’s doors or look in the phone book for foreign names.

“When we go to a car accident for example, if a person involved is not here legally, we’re obligated to do something,” said Toth. “In this town, the police are not out hunting people. It’s if we find about it in the course of our normal duty.”

Toth said that the Chelsea Police Department will be meeting with members of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) on April 12 to learn more about their policies.

HRC member Susan Morel-Samuels, who was attending her first meeting with the HRC after being approved by the City Council March 20, suggested spending some time understanding exactly what the Freedom Cities Campaign procedures mean before going forward.

Also at the meeting, the HRC unanimously approved making a budget request of $5,000 to the City of Chelsea. Morel-Samuels suggested adding One World One Family to the Commission’s list of collaborative partners.

HRC member Tammy Stiles Beechey announced that she will have to step down from the HRC effective June 1 because she is moving to Sylvan Township so will no longer be eligible to be a member of the commission.

The commission meets next on Wednesday, April 19 in the City Council Chambers.

Unfortunately, Chelsea is infested with liberals - the "One Human Family, we support refugees and muslim neighbors" types. Since we're all one big happy family, perhaps this group would like to donate to my property tax fund and shovel my walks in the winter.

If they don’t have a valid license, registration and proof of insurance, then lock them up with no bail if they are here illegally.

Oh, I thought you were talking about Chelsea Hubble, and was ready to hunt down my donkey picture.

Chelsea (like Dexter) is becoming a magnet town for Ann Arbor people (and in Chelsea’s case Hollywood wannabes.) I’m glad I no longer live in Washtenaw County. That whole Ann Arbor area culture is insufferable.

I moved to Chelsea 12 years ago from Scio Twp. following a divorce. I like the “small town” feel of Chelsea - population is still under 10k. But over the years I’ve become more aware of the local liberal mindset - quite a number of “academe” types have settled here. The DDA now has the screwy idea to “redevelop” a parking lot into a community “plaza” (Ann Arbor-izing downtown), and very few have the guts to speak up and oppose it. Hopefully, my next and final move will be far away from Washtenaw County.

I used to live in Northfield Township for a long time between Ann Arbor and Whitmore Lake. It was convenient for commuting and still quite rural protected by the maligned greenbelt. Whitmore Lake keeps that area a bit grounded.

After I no longer commuted to A2, I had enough of the county and moved to the Livingston County side of Milford. It was nice when I looked at the ballot and saw a lot of positions where democrats didn't even have candidates. The only downside politically is that I couldn't vote for Tim Walberg anymore.
