On this one sure, I still think it’s really bad policy to set ourselves up as the planets enforcer of what is acceptable violence or not. It is directly apposed to Washington’s wisdom.

Washington’s farewell address was more concerned about the dangers of secession not the danger of foreign involvements per se. A weak nation just barely begun operates under different set of constraints than one which is the most powerful in the world.

His remarks were directed at the Democrat-Republicans attempt to drag the US into a war on the side of the fanatical French Revolution. He knew that would only produce a disaster having much experience with the most powerful force in the world and that a rematch was the least desirable of alternatives.
