As a female fan of both Marvel and DC during the 60’s, I always preferred Marvel because the Superheroes were so much more “Heroic” and unabashedly VIRILE.

I’m interested in your opinion. So, as a woman, you’re not really looking to see a portrayal of women super heroes. You want to see heroic male, and as you say, virile, action heroes.

And, the action heroes are entertainment above all, aren’t they? And not really something which we should make some sociological or political statement about?

Absolutely. As a straight adolescent female art major, I liked looking at drawings of muscular manly men, saving people from evildoers. This is a noble tradition in Western Civilization. The heroes of Myth and legend were like this all through History. The words "Virtue" and "Virile" both have the same Latin root, "Virs", meaning "Man" or Male. Although I also found female heroes entertaining, it was only when they displayed "Heroic" actions, Like Xena, or The Heroic Females of Norse Mythology. Mythology, Art, Comic Books, Stories, Movies, etc, are all, as you say, Entertainment. I do NOT want to be "lectured" when I am being "entertained". As a woman, I enjoy seeing good-looking, strong, and decent men being "heroic".

If I may, I like female super heroes. The Golden and early Silver Age versions.
