Trump declares war on Republican conservatives: 'We must fight them'

President Donald Trump declared war on members of his own party on Thursday by threatening the political careers of conservative Republicans who helped torpedo healthcare legislation he backed, but was quickly told the lawmakers will not bow to "bullying."

In a Twitter post, Trump took aim at the Freedom Caucus, a bloc of the most conservative Republicans in the U.S. House of Representatives, indicating he would try to defeat them in next year's congressional elections if they continued to defy him.

"The Freedom Caucus will hurt the entire Republican agenda if they don't get on the team, & fast. We must fight them, & Dems, in 2018!" Trump said on Twitter.

Because Trump faces unified opposition by Democratic lawmakers, he cannot afford to lose many Republicans as he tries to get his legislative agenda through Congress, including healthcare, tax cuts and infrastructure spending. But keeping Freedom Caucus members happy without losing the votes of Republican moderates has proven tough.

He is the one tweeting against the Freedom Caucus.
If he wants to primary Dave Brat, he becomes my political opponent.

“Right now, their first goal is to divide Trump from Trump supporters.”

Well, they’ve just about succeeded with me.

>No Republican can be elected President if the Conservatives stay home on election day.

>The Donald needs to review what happened to Willard in 2012.

No republican president can now win now without delivering on Obamacare relief. If the GOP does nothing then the single payer socialists will carry the midterms as people search for a way out of Obamacare. The idea that we stood firm with repealing the bill won’t matter to the larger public who just want out of the mess ASAP.

You need to stop trusting the media.

FC is perfectly fine voting for Ryan as Speaker

Anti FC types keep harping on this. It means nothing. A bad bill is a bad bill. It would have cemented in place Obamacare, the marketplaces, payments to crony-leftist insurers. At least now we have another chance at ending obamacare. Pass Obama-Ryancare 2.0, and Obamacare is law FOREVER.

Thank God at least the FC members read it for a change. Besides, before Ryan became speaker, he didn't have a record as Speaker. Now he has a record to judge him on.

All of the “news” today is about Trump criticizing the “Right Wing” and about Trump getting his ass handed to him by the Courts and the ‘Rats.

This is “winning?”

“The State” did not force Trump to send a tweet declaring, and I quote,: “We Must Fight Them (conservatives) in 2018”!

That is him. 100%. Nobody forced him to declare his intention to work against the re-election of conservatives.

I repeat, These Are His Words: “We Must Fight Them in 2018.”

And who is “we”? Establishment Republicans?

I’m a conservative. Obviously as far as he’s concerned, I’m not part of his “we” since he intends to defeat me in 2018.

He wants to fight me? Fine. I’m happy to oblige.

Doesn’t fit the narrative. Ignore.

The original Obamacare repeal happened when Obama was president.

I still say the “conservatives” in congress have done very little to demonstrate their conservatism .

>There seems to a distinct tilt to ‘wrong’ in the past few weeks. There is a Wormtongue in there somewhere. Trump was elected by conservatives and disaffected Democrats, not Beltway turds.

Trump was elected on the strength of his national/populist/getting things done platform. Conservatives are and always have been a portion of the over all coalition that elected him and as such we’re going to have to compromise.

We have 2 choices stand firm on repealing Obamacare even though we don’t have the votes and get crushed by the single payer democrats in the midterms or we cut a deal to improve conditions now get some of what we want. With that victory we get more conservatives elected at the midterms in order to create an even better bill. Unity is extremely important and the failure to display it will drive away all those populist voters that Trump added to the party.

No. It means everything. You either have principles or you don’t. The FC and their backers on here can’t claim purity because Ryan out forth a bad bill and say that backing him for Speaker is a different issue. Ryan is just as bad of a Speaker as the bill was bad. Stop trying to construct a straw man. Facts are the FC are part of the swamp and are huge frauds.

You contradict yourself

You say Ryan is a bad speaker - but you then claim FC should have voted for a bill HE constructed, kept secret for weeks, and then pushed?

Makes no sense.

Hi Tucker —

Maybe you missed it. Jim Jordan, one of the founders of the House Freedom Caucus actually submitted/filed a Bill before the AHCA was. It has been ignored this legislative session. But, good news, it passed the House of Representatives and Senate in 2015.

So, there’s your Bill. What is wrong with it?

Hopefully it won’t require a Discharge Petition to bring it to the floor.

Ratface Ryan needs to be pushed aside. He is the one who did everything wrong on this that he could.

The media isn’t forcing Trump to tweet this stuff. Does Trump realize that if they defeat the freedom caucus and conservatives stay home...and they lose the house? It’s not smart. I had serious reservations about Trump but held out hope he could do what he promised. The problem many of us had is we FORGOT he’s not conservative and never had been and now that he’s not acting conservative we are shocked. That’s our fault.

Republican moderates reject talks with House Freedom Caucus - USA Toady spin (typo intentional)

A greater number of Republican moderates was against RyanCare, than the number of HFC members. But "we" (says Trump) "must fight The Freedom Caucus."

Thanks for the suggestion, President Trump, but I will choose my own direction when it comes to political advocacy and action. And right now, your talk is getting cheaper by the second.
