I was surprised while hiking in the Ramapo Mountains along the border of NY & NJ how many Italians were involved in mining up there in the early 20th century. Too many mob movies give the impression of Italians as solely city dwellers when they came here (often from farms over there). A couple of their parishes are still there, and because there is no more mining it would make one wonder why people ever settled there (though now they’re fairly wealthy suburbs of NYC).
Did not know that—thanks.
See any Jackson Whites there?
