WASHINGTON When President Trump sent greetings to the Iranian people on Wednesday for the Persian New Year, or Nowruz, it offered a glimpse into an administration that is still debating how to deal with a country that Mr. Trump has painted as an implacable foe.
The five-paragraph statement went through multiple drafts, according to two people involved in the process. Hard-liners in the White House first tried to kill the message, and when that failed, stripped it of references to engaging with the Iranian government or a future in which Iran and the United States might peacefully coexist.
Instead, the statement, issued a day after the holiday began, reached out to the Iranian people while ignoring the government in Tehran. It paid tribute to Iranian immigrants in the United States, even as Mr. Trumps travel ban prevented relatives of those immigrants from entering the United States.

Took a swipe at President Trump and Cyrus the Great.
“The Nowruz messages have historically been occasions when the White House limits itself to good year wishes, said Ray Takeyh, an expert on Iran at the Council on Foreign Relations. It was during the Obama administration that they were infused with political content, as the White House was searching for ways to reach out to the Iranian government. So in many ways, the Trump administrations message is restoring a pre-existing tradition.
Nowruz greetings typically end with a quotation from a Persian poet. But for Mr. Trump, the White House found a saying attributed to a leader of the ancient Persian Empire, Cyrus the Great, who appeared to share the presidents respect for material success.
Freedom, dignity and wealth together constitute the greatest happiness of humanity, Mr. Trump quoted Cyrus as saying. If you bequeath all three to your people, their love for you will never die.
Trump isn’t going to give Iran $150 billion like Obama and Valerie Jarrett did?
What a disgrace.
Yea exactly. Ny Times is pissed off.
Obama treated our enemy Iran like a friend
and he treated our ally Israel like an enemy.
HOW DARE Trump not do the same.
Revolution incitement? Why has the Slimes not converted to Islam?
Words PRyno needs to take to heart.....
Good for Mr. trump.
Obama took the side of the Iranian government even as they were firing on crowds of people in the last election.
Good. What I truly think of the Iranian government would get me banned on every website in the world.
‘it offered a glimpse into an administration that is still debating how to deal with a country that Mr. Trump has painted as an implacable foe’
They sure have their talking points down pat.......
That’s because the government in Iran doesn’t represent the people.
“NY Times complaining that President Trump did not reach out to Iranian regime. Disgrace.”
Yep. NY Times is crazy.
And this is one of the great things about Trump, that he’s not scared to do this.
Too bad PRyno can’t juggle more than issue even though he has 435 ‘critters and their staffs...
Smart move. That’s an identity many Iranians want to embrace, not the theocracy-in-power that has damaged Iran’s standing in the world and sacrificed an entire generation of young men and boys for nothing in the Iran-Iraq War.
Ever notice how the NY Times writes their headlines in such a weird way? It’s very stuffy and condescending.
I don’t see a problem with this. OTOH, I don’t work for the New Yawk Slimes.
I can see what the NY Times would find so objectionable. /s
Trump is right. The Iranian Shias are saner than the crazed shias.
What worries me is that we are building up Saudi Arabia against “Iran”, but what if there was a regime change in Iran? Then the Saudis would become quickly a problem.
