When something happens in the world, I always hit twitter. It can give you eyewitness accounts pretty quickly (as you sift through the crap). Best is to search for the name of the place in whatever language seems most appropriate.

A useful Twitter stream-based GUI (perhaps, admittedly, developed originally by former Eastern bloc entrepreneurs --although I have searched and found no known or unknown malware-) is world.liveuamap.com.

These days, we have to comb through many sources, throughout the world, to get anything like even the illusion of comprehensive news and information.
