The campaign by Democrats on the Federal Election Commission to regulate the internet, from Twitter and Facebook to Drudge, is back after some liberal commissioners threw in the towel amid GOP opposition.
Seizing on an exit report card of the agency by ex-Commissioner Ann Ravel, the left is complaining that the internet isn't being regulated for political content and spending, but should be.Using the "altFEC" twitter account, one of several "alt" sites set up by government workers in agencies resisting the new Trump administration, the proponents reference Ravel's critical report.
"It means that the @FEC's disclosure rules have not been updated for the era of YouTube, Facebook, or Twitter," it said, reiterating charges from Ravel and others that the FEC rules are outdated. She led the effort to change them and Republicans on the commission said that her goal was only to regulate right-leaning websites, like Drudge, and online campaigns of Republicans.
It was part of a tweetstorm that Ravel cheered in a tweet. "Thanks altFEC for spreading the word to people about this important agency which is not doing what the public has a right to expect it to do," she tweeted.
"altFEC is attacking the GOPers' original vote to apply the internet exemption to a conservative organization," said an insider, noting that Republicans pushed to keep regulations from internet sites in order to maintain its free-wheeling style.
The new push for regulation drew a laugh from a conservative FEC watcher: "It is ironic that the Democrats are using an anonymous twitter account to attack the right of non-profit organizations to post content on the web for free without disclosing their donors."

They see freedom in action and they just can’t help themselves, they want to “regulate” it. ie. control and exert power over it.
Can’t have those right-wingers voicing their opinions so freely.
There ONE speech, political, the Founding Fathers did NOT want messed with is the one the elites want governated.
That is correct. The highest protection under 1A is given to political speech.
And why exactly are these DEMS still in power?
Time or Trump to cap a few knees at the FEC and remind them what their actions really amount to.
This is like the government regulating paper, because someone might write political information on it.
How about fining CNN and everyone else for fake news?
How is the FEC dealing with the news that CNN provided Hillary Clinton with the townhall questions in advance and colluded with the DNC and Clinton campaign to deny Bernie Sanders the nomination?
The FEC needs to disappear because they do nothing. Vote fraud, media fabrications (the forged Waco documents), on and on.
Get rid of them, ok idea, lousy in enforcement.
The British Government tried that on us with the Stamp Act of 1765. It might not necessarily be the FEC that would try something like that. I could see the EPA trying to make ink or paper a regulated commodity because of the pollutants involved.
“...the internet isn’t being regulated for political content and spending...”
What part of “Congress shall make no law... Abridging the freedom speech or of the press...” do they not understand?
And if Congress can’t do it, the FEC certainly can’t!
These maggots attack the 1st amendment...and are still employed??
Q: And why exactly are these DEMS still in power?
A: A dumber electorate/base?
A: The Uniparty
A: Activist Judiciary
A: We are no longer a (constitutional) Republic
A: ....
How many did you want?
I have yet to read anything written by Drudge. His site links to stories all over the place. So are the going to require approval before he links to a story?
