LOCKHART, TX (WTNH)– A 27-year-old Texas teacher, who is accused of having sex with one of her students, is trending after her smiling mugshot went viral.

According to the Mirror, married science teacher, Sarah Fowlkes, was arrested for having an “improper relationship” with a 17-year-old student of Lockhart High School in Lockhart, Texas.

The investigation began on March 10th after a tip from officials at the high school. This led detectives to the student who admitted to being in contact physically and by messages with Fowlkes.

The Mirror reports that Fowlkes was charged after turning herself into police, just hours after reportedly celebrating her birthday out at a restaurant with her husband of four years.

Fowlkes has been suspended from the school and counselling is now being offered to students there.

I'm not indignant - I'm just not someone who thinks teachers having sex with underage students is something to laugh off. Again, this point of view is considered normal. Dismissing pedophilia and commenting on how sexy the pedophile is - that's not so normal.

I've always wondered about cases of this type that go unreported. The teenage boy keeps his mouth shut; the female teacher does the same and no one is the wiser. But in the era of social media, “secrets” of that type don't remain secret very long.

Never confirmed any illicit student-teacher relationships during my days in high school 40 years ago. Our female teachers (as a group) were very unattractive and if they were on the prowl, I don't imagine they had very much luck. Same held true for 99% of our male teachers. Apparently, they didn't want to risk their careers on a fling with a student.

The exception was our drama instructor, who was relatively young and his female students found him very attractive. Lots of rumors about him boinking cute girls who were in the drama club and it was not surprise that many of them wound up being cast in school productions. Don't recall his office having a casting couch; I can only assume the auditions were held elsewhere. The same teacher also made it a point to fawn over the kids of school board members and other important officials. After being a struggling actor in New York for a few years, he wasn't about to do anything to jeopardize his new-found security.

Whatever his modus operandi, it worked. He got tenure, taught in the local school system for 30 years and retired. And, for a small, rural district, the drama department never seemed to lack for funding. I did hear about one former student who named her son after him, but that was supposedly a “tribute” to her favorite teacher and not an indication of parentage (nod, nod, wink, wink).

Sec. 21.12. IMPROPER RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN EDUCATOR AND STUDENT. (a) An employee of a public or private primary or secondary school commits an offense if the employee:

(1) engages in sexual contact, sexual intercourse, or deviate sexual intercourse with a person who is enrolled in a public or private primary or secondary school at which the employee works;

(2) holds a certificate or permit issued as provided by Subchapter B, Chapter 21, Education Code, or is a person who is required to be licensed by a state agency as provided by Section 21.003(b), Education Code, and engages in sexual contact, sexual intercourse, or deviate sexual intercourse with a person the employee knows is:

(A) enrolled in a public primary or secondary school in the same school district as the school at which the employee works; or

(B) a student participant in an educational activity that is sponsored by a school district or a public or private primary or secondary school, if:

(i) students enrolled in a public or private primary or secondary school are the primary participants in the activity; and

(ii) the employee provides education services to those participants; or

(3) engages in conduct described by Section 33.021, with a person described by Subdivision (1), or a person the employee knows is a person described by Subdivision (2)(A) or (B), regardless of the age of that person.

(b) An offense under this section is a felony of the second degree.

(b-1) It is an affirmative defense to prosecution under this section that:

(1) the actor was the spouse of the enrolled person at the time of the offense; or

(2) the actor was not more than three years older than the enrolled person and, at the time of the offense, the actor and the enrolled person were in a relationship that began before the actor's employment at a public or private primary or secondary school.

(c) If conduct constituting an offense under this section also constitutes an offense under another section of this code, the actor may be prosecuted under either section or both sections.

(d) The name of a person who is enrolled in a public or private primary or secondary school and involved in an improper relationship with an educator as provided by Subsection (a) may not be released to the public and is not public information under Chapter 552, Government Code.
