Public broadcasting fires back at White House over proposed budget cuts

PBS and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting have pushed back against a White House budget proposal that would drastically cut, or eliminate entirely, funding to the organizations as part of a major realignment of fiscal priorities that includes a big increase in defense spending.

“PBS and our nearly 350 member stations,” said a statement released Thursday, “along with our viewers, continue to remind Congress of our strong support among Republican and Democratic voters, in rural and urban areas across every region of the country. We have always had support from both parties in Congress, and will again make clear what the public receives for federal funding for public broadcasting. The cost of public broadcasting is small, only $1.35 per citizen per year, and the benefits are tangible: increasing school readiness for kids 2-8, support for teachers and homeschoolers, lifelong learning, public safety communications and civil discourse.”

The statement also cites one poll showing that only 21 percent of Americans (32 percent of Republicans) favor ending public broadcasting support, and another that found 70 percent of Trump voters (and 83 percent of Americans overall) saying they want Congress to find savings elsewhere.

We got our first T.V. in the summer of '49 and though I was little, I was lucky to have been able to watch some of the GOLDEN AGE of T.V.!

Oh sure, the shows weren't ALL great, I was too little for most of that "AGE"'s best stuff, but I was able to see a LOT of the great stuff, as I was growing up. THERE IS NOTHING ANYWHERE NEAR AS GOOD, ON T.V., TODAY, AND HASN'T BEEN FOR DECADES!

Kids' shows have always had commercials; network and now cable.

I watch a LOT less T.V. now ( and for quite a while ), than I once did.

I don't believe Americans support the elimination of public funding for Sesame Street

Those who don't are both ignorant and clueless on the revenues generated by the Sesame Street brand alone...

There is no reason for either public television or public radio to be subsidized by taxpayer monies. The should be defunded and forced to compete in the private sector just like all the other radio and TV programs in this country.

The royalties for Sesame Street alone would float PBS. Don’t fall for the lies.

I am on FB and defend our President when I can. I ‘comment’.. and I did that when Trump was campaigning. They do not know Donald Trump... they don’t take the time to know him... they just hear the lies the media spread every day and it’s poison. They hate him because he’s wealthy.. because he has a beautiful wife.. because he has good kids... and because he’s sure of himself. All that is coated in jealousy/envy... there has to be something wrong with a person for them to be “liked” or accepted... just one thing that brings them down to the people’s level... and they are still trying to find what that is in Trump.
Every time I hear a liberal say why they hate Trump, it’s always the things the media has told them.. what they hear from the media... none of it is truth .. but that doesn’t matter to them .. it gives them a reason to hate. I do hear some who have had a sit down with the President, and come away impressed.
But when I hear their comments,... lies.. I just can’t let it sit... I usually comment. Too many are thin.. empty of anything but what their ears collect in a day. I do pray for Trump.. and I think God has selected him in answer to our prayers... but it’s been rough for him so far.. and I’m really tired of the things the left is hanging onto that are just ridiculous.

There is NO ONE who could do this like Donald Trump has... to forge ahead in the face of all the criticism and attacks. The republicans are way too weak and would rather it continue as it has for the past years... but the corruption is so deep and wide if we don’t get it routed out, we are not going to be able to... I am dismayed that so many would give hillary a pass on everything she has ever done... and that is better than our electing Trump. Go figure!!
We, who live outside the east coast and washington.. and the west coast... live a different life and know more than those who think obama was ok and the world was in fine shape... no, obama is not okay and the world was being destroyed by the corruption that obama brought.. and the years before obama also.
