An altercation is when two people are disagreeing and some pushing happens.
This is definitely a mugging since one individual was set upon and physical attacked by a complete stranger.

I think MUGGING is a.....stretch. I'd say it was an altercation. An unprovoked physical attack is more than an altercation - if someone does that to one in a sane State, the victim can defend himself with deadly force.
