Good timeline summary. Regarding GHCQ, they've been doing surveillance for US intelligence agencies for decades. Since the CIA and NSA are supposed to target foreign rather than domestic targets, they get around this by using GHCQ. There are similar rules in Britain regarding domestic surveillance on their part, so they make use of NSA/CIA assets. This is widely known and has been going on essentially forever. No government believes you have any right to privacy at all. That is apparently a part of government DNS by default.
