They say he married her to bind a political alliance with her rich father, Abu Bakr.
Muhammad reportedly did not take her into his harem and “consumate” the marriage until Aisha was a ripe old 9 (maybe 8).
But here is more of the sordid tale...
Muhammad first had a daughter from another wife, whom he married off to his cousin Ali. Since Ali was the product of Muhammad’s uncle (who adopted the orphaned Muhammad) and Muhammad’s sister; Ali became Muhammad’s cousin, nephew and son-in-law. Ali was also Muhammad’s first convert to islam.
Although, Muhammad came to power with the patronage of Abu Bakr, and was supposed to produce an heir with Aisha to keep their fortune and empire in Abu Bakr’s family, problems arose. Muhammad was in his sixties when Aisha was in her teens. One day, he publicly threw Aisha out for being unfaithful with a teenage boy. After some tense talks, Muhammad agreed to take Aisha back, after a waiting period to make sure that she wasn’t pregnant.
After that however, Muhammad starting trying to set up Ali as his heir. The net result of that campaign is that Muhammad got himself poisoned. He died with his head in Aisha’s lap, and Abu Bakr’s strongman Omar holding everyone out until Muhammad was dead (Muhammad was calling for them to bring a scribe to write down something, but no one could mess with Omar).
A few months later, Omar kicked in the door and broke the ribs of Muhammad’s only daughter (Ali’s wife), who was pregnant at the time. She died before giving birth, so Muhammad has no direct descendants. Abu Bakr took over the empire, and Omar took over after him.
She was 6 when they were married—but he didn’t take her as a wife until she reached the ripe old age of 9. She seems to have loved him and she gave him his only child—a girl when she was 15.
