The sanctions - which include a ban on the Dutch ambassador and diplomatic flights from the Netherlands but do not appear to include economic measures or travel restrictions for ordinary citizens - mark another low point in relations between Turkey and the European Union, which it still officially aims to join.

On another thread, a FReeper suggested it was a deliberate move to allow Dutch authorities to act tough, so that Wilders wouldn’t seem to be the only one willing to stand up to them.

Columnist “Spengler” over at atimes.com wrote a few articles on the Turkish economy. Pretty much what you said.

I have read that, I’m not familiar enough with such things to really understand how the internals of those evaluations work.

Yes, Turkey has that baggage. But to this day they deny Armenian Genocide. It is clear it happened. But to this day they say they didn’t do it.

It’s getting serious now; a Dutch citizen has been arrested by the Turks.

Any Dutchmen still in Turkey need to head for the exits right now!

Not it is not. The only reason that the Turks have been able to hold onto Byzantium is the goddamned British Empire and other European countries who do not want Russia to have a warm water port. I cannot tell you how many times the British aided Turkey against Russia and other Eastern European powers.
