Federal police handcuffed Democratic Rep. Luis Gutierrez for refusing to leave an Immigration and Customs Enforcement office in Chicago on Monday.
Gutierrez was there to attend a meeting between ICE officials and immigration activists, lawyers, community leaders, and elected officials. When the Illinois representative did not get the answers he wanted, however, he decided to stay.
“They were asking about specific cases and about the general conduct of ICE and deportations,” said Doug Rivlin, Gutierrez's director of communications, The Hill reports.
“The congressman has decided that he did not get the answers he was looking for from the ICE regional director and he’s going to be staying inside until he gets answers, even if that means risking arrest,” said Rivlin, according to NBC.
He was not handcuffed for long and it was unclear at the time whether he would be formally arrested over his protest.

Makes sense.
However, I thought a significant part of the government controlling the citizenry was to display that government agents have the monopoly on use of force. Obey the police or they will detain you. Carry resistance to being detained far enough and they'll shoot you. They openly display a gun to show they can use deadly force against you if they consider it justified. I thought that the display of metal cuffs hanging on their belt was part of the intimidation factor. It doesn't seem like seeing a couple of zip ties on the belt sends the same message.
I have a different take on it he is one of there bosses after all.
If any one has a right to be there and question a government employee it would be a sitting federal congressman.
Sorry federal agencies are controlled ultimately by congress.
Luis Gutierrez used to post here on FR years ago under his own name. He accused me of hating “brown people” until I told him my mom was Hispanic.
