The state will NOT shrink. At best, it will grow more slowly.

The REINS act, which has already passed the House, will remove the bureaucracy’s teeth.

Some of these truths of life may no longer be truths in the Trump era. It’s a new day.

Well, I disagree with you. If a ComDem was in office, I’d agree.

Trump is on track to do exactly what he said he would. He will drain the swamp. And what he cuts will not be missed outside of DC.

Are you a pessimist in general—or just re: government and Trump?

“The state will NOT shrink. At best, it will grow more slowly.”

A friend in Florida state government told me that when governor Bush ordered the size of agencies reduced they simply got rid of phony positions they had open requisitions for, nobody was fired. (At least in his agency.) In his agency they “privatized” meaning they had contractors doing the jobs his agency had done. They made the state employees quality control or overseers of the contractors instead of eliminating their jobs. He told me that if he didn’t do his job at all nobody would notice. (He’s not proud of this but he’s hanging on for retirement.)

The way they are reducing head count is by not hiring replacements when the old state employees retire. This is how they handled the typing pool twenty-five years ago when they went to PC’s. He said the typing employees who didn’t get other jobs simply came to work every day, in some cases for years, and read books until they retired. I was at Honeywell at the same time. The typing pool was gone inside of 45 days.

When their money spigot and fraud gets cut off, state will shrink. We can dream anyway.
