I was trying to figure it out when the pushback of Erdogan began with the Germans. They banned pro-Erdogan rallies first.

Angela Merkel has her own election later this year and the Social Democrats have been looking good in the polling there lately.

Merkel may be opting to increase her support a few more percentage points by looking anti-Islamist to take votes away from the AFD Party.
