The U.S. military is sending an additional 2,500 ground combat troops to a staging base in Kuwait from which they could be called upon to back up coalition forces battling the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria.

The deployment will include elements of the 82nd Airborne Division's 2nd Brigade Combat Team, which is based at Fort Bragg in North Carolina. About 1,700 soldiers from the same unit are overseas now, spread between Iraq and Kuwait.

This is the “Lilly Pad” basing strategy that Rumsfeld pushed after OIF. Small bases that could be used to house US troops coming from the Continental US in times of need.

I still don’t fully understand what is at stake in Syria. Looks more like the Thirty Years War than any recent conflict.

Trump won't send our warriors anywhere without the intent to win - many did their duty under Obama/Bush/Clinton but today's warriors will be proud of and eager to do their new CINC's bidding with the honor he bestows upon them.

He promised to wipe ISIS out - can't do that with drones.

First of all, thank you for your service to our nation. You are among the ‘America’s best’ I was referring to.

I was going to mention turning the majority of the ME into a glass parking lot might be an option, but I thought installing a Murbarak and Khadafi and Hussein clone would do the trick as well.

However, I always say the person closest to the situation has the best information - we’ll go with your solution...

This is a standby force to protect those on the battlefield should they need rescue.

I think the troops going into Iraq will be there to kill ISIS, no more, no less.

It better be what they are there for. No more of our TAX dollars for NATION building.

President Trump said that we have spent TRILLIONS over in Iraq and Stan and he was all against the FERAL Government wasting OUR money. Well let's see if he was once again shooting off his mouth or is a man of his word.

No more nation building, kill the effing muslims even if they are wearing a burqa. ROEs should reflect this, no need to wait for them to pick up a weapon. If they are on the field of battle, they are enemy combatants. Shoot to kill.

And do not come back and tell me I am a heartless person. I am still alive and walking.

Obama did not “cost hundreds of thousands” of American lives. Nor did he “create ISIS”...that’s just a ridiculous thing some conservatives say to make themselves feel better. George Bush and his neo-con buddies created ISIS by destroying the nationalist governments that kept jihadists in some form of restraint.

Oh, and it is possible to flush American lives down the toilet when you send them off to die unnecessarily...sheesh.

If Obama had not disregarded military advice and precipitously removed the troops from Iraq, and if he didn’t telegraph his every move in advance, then ISIS, as we know it, would not exist. Oh, and don’t forget the millions of dollars in US weaponry that we’ve turned over to ISIS. And what about Libya? And the Arab Spring, fomented in large part by our own State Dept and CIA-backed Google? How has that worked out? This will be a battle for the ages on a scale never seen before.

By sending so many of our people into battle we are girding them for the real battle to come, and infusing our country with the will to take on these savages when they reach our own shores, which is just beginning.

You don’t have to let them “reach our own shores”. That’s what a strict immigration policy achieves. Furthermore, this saves you from having to send your own countrymen into 3rd world hell holes in order to imposed Western values on foreigners.

There’s no need for you apocalyptic vision to come to pass. Let foreigners fight among themselves AND let Europe shoulder much more of the burden of confronting Islamic aggression. Once Europe sees that peaceful integration isn’t possible, they’ll wise up. It may be a painful realization for them to make, but they will.
