Things have changed then. 25 years ago I was in Detroit on business and took a cab across to Windsor to go to a club. Nothing but a California drivers license for ID. No question on the Canada end, but on the return they quizzed me on city I was born in, name of high school attended, etc. Seemed pretty pro-forma.
I am actually pretty shocked that any foreign citizen can come to America on a “tourism or business” visa. Seems like anyone could do that and simply become a visa “overstay” working and living here illegally and dropping anchor babies years later. Why would any Mexican pay a coyote $5,000 to sneak them across ? Why not buy nice ski clothes, get a tourist visa to ski in Aspen, and disappear from there ? Cheaper and less risky than $5,000 to a coyote.
Things have indeed changed. You ain't getting into Canada from Detroit unless you have appropriate documentation..............
And upon your return, if you so much as look at the U.S. customs agent the wrong way, you're going to get your vehicle pulled aside and a full search of its contents will follow......been there, done that.

For example the guatelamlans give up everything they have there to the local coyote, just for the down payment. They then are moved thru Mexico to a dairy in nw ia and give up half their wages for the next ten years.
coyotes in home village, in transport and in nw ia.
