I recommend that you read The Great Triumvirate: Webster, Clay and Calhoun by Merrill Peterson. It's the story of how, from the War of 1812 to the Compromise of 1850, the country was run by three long-serving men in Congress while presidents came and went with little impact -- except for Jackson, who had a huge impact.
