Or perhaps “unnamed Obama official granted more credibility by untrustworthy media than sitting president”

Yup, CNN has proved yet again that they are merely waterboys for the Democrap Party.
They can’t even pretend to be independent and impartial.
This episode also shows how the MSM has (for a very long time) gone totally bonkers for anonymous sources when those sources tell stories that the MSM likes to tell. In general, no anonymous sourcing should EVER be used to substantiate important details of public interest stories. There may have to be some exceptions but those should be very hard-won with a much greater preponderance of evidence.
The liberal MSM has gotten extremely lazy and corrupt with “anonymous” deep-throat claims for anything and everything they want to report, obviously used against conservative and Republican people/ideas the vast majority of the time.
MSM shouldn’t be allowed to “deny” a story like this one with anonymous sources. Sure, utilizing background sources to learn of new details and targets for further reporting, that is a totally reasonable method. But NOT to base you story upon unprovable anonymous claims.....
