Californians are in shock that after five years of too little water, the problem now is too much. Some are calling this a wake-up call for California as climate change could bring similar damage.
But this shouldn't be a surprise, says Noah Diffenbaugh, a climate scientist at Stanford University.
"It's actually exactly what has been predicted by scientists for at least 30 years," he says.
He says California is likely to see more extreme flooding with climate change. And the reason is pretty simple. If it's warmer, storms produce more rain instead of snow.
But that's not what California's water system was built to do when it was designed a century ago.
It was built, in large part, around the snowpack in the Sierra Nevada.
California is experimenting with spreading floodwater onto fields where it can seep into the groundwater. The groundwater needs recharging after being heavily used during the drought.
But if the state is going to catch up to the climate it has now, there's still a long way to go.

These morons just got done telling us that this was the big drought, a 30-40 year drought, all caused by us of course.
I can’t laugh at these tools anymore. I despise them. They are the enemy.
Absolute BS.
This storm sequence is utterly normal. It happens on about a decadal cycle.
Been here, seen that.
Actual rainfall is consistent with storms in 1998, 1993, 1982, and even more going back into the 60’s and 50’s.
It’s actually LESS water then was considered routine in the 50’s high point. But not much.
There’s nothing “extreme” about this storm. It’s ordinary business in California. The storms in ‘82 caused far more damage - what was the excuse for that?
Utterly predictable that these buttwipes at Stahn-Ford would try to take advantage of the situation and claim “Climate change! Yeaaaaaa! We’re all gonna die!”
He is, of course, just making this up.
The Sierra snow pack is >200% of average. The dams and waterways are designed for many different winter scenarios, but they do need an alleged governor who is interested in maintaining them.
I know, I know, that's not how they do things in California.
Like climate change was to produce more hurricanes after katrina....
Which of course was also the reason why they didn't bother to fix the roads, the dams, the power lines, the storm drains.
They did trim a few trees. Gotta keep the Landscaper economy going, yuh know?
OMG! The sky is falling!
When all that snow melts from this past winter, it's gonna flood California anyway!

No matter what happens, it is rock-solid, scientific proof that global warming... er... man made climate change is real.
It is a scientific fact that weather changes are caused by people, particularly fossil fuel (but not massive amounts of coal used in China).
And it is a scientific fact that politicians can stop this by massive regulation of energy business and increased taxation.
There is no room for debate. This is science.
Of course we are talking about political science, not real science. They lie about the data because they have an agenda.
This story is like hunting far and wide to find a fortune teller who got some big prediction right. With enough random guesses there are bound to be a few that are right. These people cannot accurately predict the weather a month from now. If the earth and weather were as fragile as these people claim, mankind would have become extinct long ago.
3 years ago, scientist said “climate change” was the reason for the drought now its the reason for flooding. Okay.
Last year we were told the climate change was going to cause never ending drought in California. Now that it’s rained for a couple month climate change is going to cause never ending floods. Just as predicted. Was that prediction before or after the drought prediction? Or does it even matter to these clowns. As long as the government funding keeps flowing we’ll say anything.
Yeah anything good.
Exactly, It rained where it normally rains and snowed (heavily) where it normally snows. Deepest snowpack in the Sierra in two decades right now.
Cuckoo clock in Hell.
“...Whatever is happening, that is bad...”
Flooding due to the current weather is not to blame and isn’t “bad”. I Blame the bad decision to build communities a mile downstream and directly in the path of the nation’s tallest dam.
They never stop. What disturbs me most is that the Climate Cultists are now in control of formerly respectable universities like Stanford and many others. The Age of Enlightenment is being subverted into the Dark Ages by tenured fools.

Exactly. They are having trouble keeping their stories straight. So greenies which is it? The big flood or the big drought?
