The top female time in the Boston Marathon last year was 17 minutes slower than the mens time, which means the lead woman is buried with a lot of men.

The top male couldn’t cheat obviously, but the top woman might have a harder time of it now too. They probably have a camera on the lead the whole time anyway now.

The difference in times between male and female is amazing...there were, and still probably are, women who say they can’t do as well in given sports because they aren’t given the opportunities men have, instead of admitting that physically, the men have a biological advantage they can’t overcome, namely testosterone.

By the way, I think that is Ed King in the picture with Rosie Ruiz...:)

Yes, that was Governor Ed King. Actually "not a bad guy" as Jerry Williams, top Boston radio talk show host of the day, often said. Despite being officially a Democrat, he was one of the more conservative governors Massachusetts ever had in the modern era. His term of office was sandwiched in between Dukakis's several terms. But during that term, Ed King managed to roll back taxes, institute mandatory sentences for drug dealers and even tried re-introducing the death penalty (which got defeated). King also endorsed Ronald Reagan for president.

Good memories. All of this was so long ago. 1980 was also the year that the U.S. Olympic hockey team won the gold medal. I remember being at Mike Eruzione's parade in Winthrop, MA.
